ReplyIt is unwise to compare this with the resident parking near the train station. Commuter parking is 250 days a year, parking for an 8 - 10 hour stretch in a dense neighborhood with limited private driveway space. What we're asking for around the beach is about 8 to 12 days max a year that require more parking than the current allocation. And remember, this added space will be the LAST spaces to fill, not the first. I don't know how emphatically I can stress this point. Almost always on a Saturday or Sunday, and just for a few hours.

" It sounds as if the focus you believe the band to have is making the best musicians possible, where as I believe that focus is offering the students an artistic outlet, and giving them an opportunity they might not otherwise have." Yes, I believe BOTH of these are important, and are not mutually exclusive.

"Put in a position to win" - I'm referring to the idea that the middle school allows so little time to band rehearsal. No denying Ed Jack is a nice guy. Scott Winship is producing a better product.

ReplyScott Winship has done a remarkable job resurrecting a failing high school band program. Much of the problem, as alluded to in other comments, is the quality of the band and music situations before students reach high school. The amount of time scheduled for music and band rehearsals is minuscule. It's amazing there are ANY students arriving at the high school after their previous experience, in which they were certainly not "put in a position to win". But good for them for sticking with it. If Scott could manage his own feeder program, the band quality would increase markedly at both levels - at the Middle school due to the upgrade in the band director, and at the High School because those students would arrive far more prepared then they are now when they reach that point.

Marblehead and Salem have very strong music programs. Why do they want us?

ReplyI know it's too late, but what a great spot for police and fire! Think of the time and miles on the firetruck's odometers saved as 75% of their runs would only be a couple of hundred yards down the street.

ReplyWe must EXPAND street parking at Phillips Beach!
All the streets in that neighborhood are straight and wide enough to accommodate parking along at least one side for their ENTIRE LENGTH. And not just Ocean and Shepard. Longley, Bradley, et al ought to be included too. I stress this because the current resident parking program is designed only to prevent people from parking in front of the houses in that neighborhood. The residents themselves do not need any of that street space, as all have sufficient driveways, and will be walking to the beach. They are never in competition with beach goers for the curbsides. The curbspace is not their private property, and is maintained by my taxes as much as theirs. I too am a resident!
If parking is really a safety issue, and I personally believe it is not, then here should be no parking at all. It is no less safe for someone who does not live on that particular street to park there. Why is it safe to park between September and June?
I do agree that a Recreation Sticker should be required.
In reality, there are only about 8 to 12 days a year that require more parking than the current allocation. I don't know how emphatically I can stress that point. Almost always on a Saturday or Sunday, and just for a few hours. -
