Lynn Takes Over Swampscott Police Dispatch Duties

Emergency calls for Swampscott police are being dispatched by a Lynn dispatcher as of today. The new dispatch system went into effect Wednesday morning.

The new police dispatch system for Swampscott police went into effect Wednesday morning about 9:30. A Lynn dispatcher is now dispatching reports from 911 calls directly to Swampscott officers on the street. Previously, Swampscott police fielded the emergency calls at the station and relayed the information to responding officers. The transition to the new system was about a year in works and has included state-funded communication equipment upgrades, said Swampscott Police Chief Ron Madigan. There is a learning curve with the new system but the department is adjusting, the police chief said. All emergency calls that require an immediate response should be made to 911, the chief said. All non-emergency calls should be made to the station’…

DNA Evidence Can Be Important to Swampscott Police Investigations

DNA evidence has played an important role in the investigation of a 2007 murder case in Lynn.

DNA evidence helped lead authorities to a suspect in the 2007 murder of Lara Rizzo of Lynn, a case that received widespread media attention Monday with the arraignment of a Lynn man charged with the murder. Swampscott police say DNA evidence can be important in helping them solve crimes. And the department has resolved three or four cases, including a sexual assault, through DNA matches, said Swampscott Det. Ted Delano. DNA from Swampscott crimes — including blood evidence taken from a house break — has been linked to the DNA of known individuals in unrelated cases, the detective said. In the Lynn case, fingernail scrapings and clippings were gathered from the victim. A DNA profile generated from this evidence was searched against DNA …

DA Drops Charges Against Swampscott Man

A review of evidence including, most recently, medical records, led to the decision by Essex DA Jonathan Blodgett to not prosecute Anthony McKay on an assault charge.

Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett will not prosecute a local man charged in October with assault for allegedly breaking the jaw of a man he caught stealing tools from his truck. Anthony McKay, 29, was scheduled for a pretrial hearing in Lynn District Court on Jan. 24. Supporters of Anthony McKay, including his brother, Ken McKay, had planned to protest on that day. Essex DA Spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan said this morning that the DA's office filed a nol pros —  a legal term meaning the prosecution ceases — on Jan. 6, in Lynn District. The decision was based on the DA's Office and Swampscott Police's review of the case, she said.  The evidence most recently reviewed were medical records, on Jan. 4, the spokeswoman said…
