1) Newsbit of the Day: The Steeves triplets, 5-year-olds Fiona, Hannah and Mia, and their mom, Marcie, of Lynn, stand for a group photo on Burrill Street after leaving the Swampscott library on Friday. Off-camera in a baby seat was the triplet's baby brother, Dylan, an infant. Marcie got each of her children two books and a video. She got the 1950 Dr. Seuss book If I Ran the Zoo to read aloud to the three of them. There's less time for individual readings with triplets so she does group readings. Here is the beginning of If I Ran the Zoo: "It's a pretty good zoo, Said young Gerald McGrew "And the fellow who runs it, Seems proud of it, too." 2) Swampscott Scholars: 2012 Swampscott High graduate Gillian Dilisio received the Paradise Gym…

The PBS Masterpiece has many local followers who satisfy their Downton habit by checking out DVDs at the Swampscott library.

This article was submitted by Alyce Deveau, the Swampscott Public Library's director. There has developed over the past year a great interest in the PBS miniseries Downton Abbey. At the library we have year one and year two of this very popular television show on DVD. This series has a great following and these DVDs are constantly being checked out. Many Americans love to watch the “Austen-like” family drama complete with castles, upstairs and downstairs maids and seemingly great opulence. The plot centers on the inheritance laws of England and the present inhabitants of Downton Abbey. The Earl of Granthan, Lord Crawley and his wife and three daughters are the current residents. Lord Crawley feels that his mission in life is to …

This article was submitted by Swampscott Librarian Izzi Abrams. I am not a fan of Stephen King. To be honest, I am not a fan of his genre. I did, however, read a book he wrote entitled Different Seasons, a collection of four novellas which were unique, exciting , well written and very different from his usual books. In fact two of these novellas were made into movies, The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me. I have not picked up another Stephen King book since that time (mid 1980s), but when the publication of his new book was announced, 11/22/63, I was ready to give this author another chance. I was hoping King had written something different and I was pleasantly surprised I don’t want to discourage you from reading this novel but …

This article was submitted by Swampscott Library Director Alyce Deveau. It is amazing to me that some books do go off the shelf at the library. Take for instance cookbooks, which are ever-popular. We have a huge cookbook section and we are constantly purchasing new additions to this collection. The fact that these get checked out isn’t what amazes me, it is the type of book that gets checked out. We live in a very health-conscious society today with everyone watching their sugar, their carbs or the bottom line, their weight. Despite this, three books are going off the shelf at the library that defy these interests. The first book is entitled Sugar, Sugar: Every Recipe Has a Story by Kimberly “Momma” Reiner and Jenna Sanz-Agero. Sugar, …

This article was submitted by Swampscot Library Director Alyce Deveau. Probably the best way to tell which books are flying off of the shelves here at the library is to check which books are on our “put away carts”. Those wheeled wonders that help us to move books from one area to another in the library can tell many tales about which books have been popular. Many readers search for books for self improvement as is exhibited by the books selected for this article. One such book that can be found on the “put away’ cart is The Gift of Anger by Marcia Cannon. This psychotherapist teaches some anger resolution techniques that she has learned from other therapists and which she uses with her own patients. She discusses the entire process of …

This is through a program known as Overdrive which you can access through the Swampscott Library website. You can browse the collection of eBooks, choose a title, and check it out using your library card. Bestselling Author Lisa Genova Speaks at the Swampscott Library
As scientists discover how more and more of our behavior is the result of our genes or our brain chemistry, the question of how these influences create what we call a person’s “character” is not easily answered. This intersection between science and behavior is where novelist Lisa Genova points her laser, and opens her heart. Genova, who has a degree in biopsychology from Bates and a PhD from Harvard in neuroscience, has made a career of creating characters with neurological disorders, characters her readers both identify with and learn from. Her first novel, Still Alice, the self-published phenomenon that made the New York Times Bestseller list and was eventually picked up by Simon & Schuster, featured a college professor who develops …

The Swampscott Public Library hosted a workshop last week on how to apply to colleges. Here is a list of helpful books available from your library.
This article was submitted by Swampscott Library Director Alyce Deveau. Last Thursday evening the Young Adult Librarian, Sandy Moltz, hosted a college night at the Swampscott Public Library. She introduced speakers from Princeton Review, the Swampscott High School Guidance Department and Sallie Mae who came to the library to help parents of sophomores and juniors prepare for the major process of applying to college. Because at this time of year generally and specifically because of the program, college oriented books are flying off our shelves. A good place to start in this college process is to read The Anxious Test- Takers Guide to Cracking Any Test by the Staff of the Princeton Review. This book will help students get over the …
