The crew from AC Castle finished the job Tuesday, after stripping the old weathered shingles.
The chronic leak at the fire house is a thing of the past. Over the past week a crew from AC Castle Roofing of Danvers stripped the aged and cracking asphalt shingles from the fire house roof and replaced them with new shingles. They also repaired any of the sheathing that needed it under the shingles. The sheathing was done in boards since the fire house's construction predates the introduction of plywood as roof sheathing, the fire chief said. The project cost $23,700, said Fire Chief Kevin Breen. It went out to bid and the job went to AC Castle, the fire chief said. The fire chief and town inspector Rich Baldacci discovered the roof's poor condition last year. They traced a chronic leak to the roof's cupola. While they were on the …

The public safety officers are running in Sunday's Run-Walk to Home Base, ending at Fenway Park.
Here's how the firefighter and police officer found out they both would be crossing home plate at Fenway Park on Sunday: About two months ago officer Candace Doyle asked firefighter Richard Blake to donate to her Run-Walk to Home Base fundraiser for veterans. The firefighter told her he was also running in the fundraiser for veterans who have returned from Iraq or Afghanistan with combat stress or brain injuries. The firefighter and police officer will be among 4,000 runners and walkers in Sunday's event. Each of the participants will raise at least $1,000 to provide clinical care for the vets, support for their families and research to prevent these kinds of injuries and improve treatments. Combat stress and brain injuries effect as …

The two-days of rapid intervention training at the Swampscott Fire Station showed crews how to get themselves and each other clear of danger.
The high-pitched alarm signals one of their own is in peril. On Monday at the Swampscott Fire Station, distress alarms sounded from firefighters during rapid intervention training, lessons in rescuing each other. Swampscott and Marblehead firefighters in turnout gear and masks blackened by wax paper swam a sea of dangling wires. They carried fellow firefighters down a 24-foot ladder. And they lifted, slid and squeezed firefighters through narrow openings. The state-funded lessons came from veteran firefighters visiting from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow. Swampscott Fire Chief Kevin Breen said this kind of training arose in response to firefighting tragedies in the state. In many instances, before a firefighter rescues a…

Firefighters had the town ladder truck out of its bay and in front of the fire house for maintenance today.
We asked this question: What were firefighters doing to the department's ladder truck this afternoon? Swampscott Fire Chief Kevin Breen said they were changing a piece of breathing air hose that was leaking. The air hose extends to the ladder truck's bucket. The new piece of breathing hose was made up by FB Harris Industrial supply in Lynn, the fire chief said. "While they were at it the guys replaced a back-up battery for the pre-piped ladder pipe controls," the fire chief said.

Wednesday night's fire at 84 Pine St. was accidental, said Swampscott fire Capt. Remo Zimbaldi. Fire erupted in the kitchen shortly before 9:30 pm Wednesday and smoke blanketed the home and street. Smoke, water and fire damage left the 2 1/2-story home uninhabitable for the couple and their three children. The family is staying with a relative, according to neighbor Cindy Cavallaro, who is coordinating a help drive for the family. About 12 hours earlier, firefighters knocked down flames before they could spread from the kitchen to second-floor bedrooms. Firefighters ripped out cabinets and cut into the wall and ceiling to chase down hidden hotspots and prevent the fire's spread upward, Swampscott fire Lt. Bob Surette said earlier. No …

New Swampscott firefighters Chris Dipietro and Chris Drinon had to do some training, unfortunately, the Swampscott ladder truck was in Pennsylvania getting repairs. Thanks to the folks at the Melrose fire department, there was no interruption in Dipietro and Drinon’s training. “The Chief over in Melrose was good enough to let us borrow Ladder 2 from Melrose while our ladder was getting repaired, and we were able to conduct training exercises in the parking lot at Stanley School,” Captain John Quinn said Wednesday afternoon, as Drinon and Dipietro and other members of the Swampscott fire department wrapped up their training exercise. Melrose’s Ladder 2 blasted a high stream of water over the far end of the Stanley School parking lot, which …

The appointments by selectmen represent personal milestones and stability for the department.
The Fire Department gained stability Tuesday when selectmen appointed James Potts Deputy Fire Chief and Christopher Drinon a firefighter, members of the department said. Potts has been acting deputy chief since last year. The 20-year veteran of the Swampscott department said after Tuesday's ceremony that the appointment lifted a burden from his shoulders. "It's a relief," he said. Qualifying for the promotion took lots of studying and testing, he said. Potts and his wife Kimberly said his hard work had paid off. Newly appointed firefighter Christopher Drinon, 28, of Swampscott is just starting out in his career. About 10 members of the department attended the ceremonies at Town Hall. Chief Kevin Breen, the union president and rank and file…

Firefighters spent more than two hours extinguishing the fire, the cause of which was unknown.
A brush fire swept over about an acre of dry leaves, dead grass and fallen trees off Pierro Terrace Sunday. Pierro Terrace is near Burpee Road in the general vicinity of the high school. Firefighters hauled their fire hoses through yards to the forested area at about 5 p.m., said Swampcott fire Capt. John Quinn. The seven firefighters streamed and sprayed water on the burning vegetation and swept up embers with fire-resistant brooms, he said. The terrain was uneven and rocky, he said. The crew spent about 2-and-a-half hours at the scene of the fire. "I have no idea how it started," Quinn said. Lynn firefighters provided station coverage, he said.
