Bathrooms at Fisherman's Beach?

The town administrator says the beach has been getting more use and the town may post signs to let people know there are restrooms available. A life guard may be posted at the beach on weekends.

Selectman David Van Dam said at last week's meeting that the presence of public restrooms at Fisherman's Beach may surprise some people. They open June 1 and stay open to Sept. 1. He suggested extending their use from May to October. The board took no action, but Town Administrator Tom Younger said he would look into posting signs to let the public know that the restrooms are there. After all, the beach has been getting more use, he said. The town is considering posting a life guard there on weekends, the town administrator said.

Sea Notes: Stories on the Swampscott Waterfront

VIDEO: Fisherman's Gets a Sweeping

DPW crews brought a blower, loader, Bobcat and dump truck to Fisherman's Beach last week to scour the parking lot where winter storms had left sand piled.

But for the sailboats on stands you might have had a hard time telling where the beach ended and the parking lot began at Fisherman's Beach last week. A series of winter storms left sand piled over the boat ramp and thoughout the parking lot. DPW crews descended on the mess Friday, pushing and scooping piles and blowing away the loose stuff.  The pre-spring clean-up opened up the lot for traffic and parking, preparing the popular summer destination for boating, swimming, fishing and tanning to come.

Floats, Mussels and Starfish

When the Fisherman's Beach floats come out of the water each fall they bring with them a host of sea creatures that have been clinging around and below deck.

Here Comes The Sun: Swampscott Sunsets

After a dreary weekend of wet and gray weather the sun made an appearance late Sunday.

After a dreary weekend of wet and gray weather the sun made an appearance late Sunday. We do not have a photo of today's sunset but we have photos of others. Here are a few Swampscott sunsets — and several from out of town, out of country — from our Patch dresser drawer.

Another fine photo of Fisherman's Beach through the fine glass in George Allen's house-cam.

This make's two dusks in a row where nature has closed the day with a picturesque sunset. This one is a panoramic shot of the harbor courtesy of the twin Olympus cameras mountd on George Allen's hillside home. Thanks, George.

Pier Railing Repairs On Hold

Selectmen opted to not include an article proposing railing repair funding on the October Town Meeting warrant.

Despite strong support for repairing the flaking pier railings, the Selectmen decided on Wednesday not to put the $60,000 repair project on the warrant for the Town Meeting in October. Bill Hennessey, chairman of the Harbor Advisory Board, urged the Selectmen to go ahead with the repair project before the Fisherman's Beach pier railings rust out and have to be replaced, which he said would be extremely expensive. The railings were repaired years ago, but the galvanizing job was so poorly done, it did not last long. A temporary fix of scraping the flaking galvanized paint off and repainting the railings did not last but about six months, Hennessey said. "The Harbor Advisory Board has been advising the Board of Selectmen about the railings…

Way to go Swampscott- let's put off yet another maintenance project as long as possible. All over this town are public areas in poor condition and disrepair. Love living here for many reasons, but this town has a serious issues with up keep and maintenance. Small repairs become huge issues because of neglect. It's not just a matter of money, it's priorities...   more ›

Fisherman's Beach at Dusk

A gorgeous pic of Fisherman's Beach from George Allen's house-cam.

George Allen sent us this photo from his house-cam, an Olympus mounted atop his hillside home. It's from 7:15 pm Thursday and shows the crescent moon at the top. Thanks George. Looks like a painting.

Sea Notes: Stories on the Swampscott Waterfront

VIDEO: Fisherman's Beach Gets a Test Cleaning

Town officials watched a surf rake do its thing last week in a 20-minute demonstration, cleaning about 10 percent of the beach.

The way DPW crews clean Fisherman's Beach now is they drag it with a York rake and dump the collected sea vegetation at the waterline for the tide to carry it off. Sometimes it does; sometimes it doesn't, says DPW Director Gino Cresta. Last week town officials watched a surf rake sweep back and forth over the Fisherman's Beach sand. Its conveyor pulled algae, eel grass and rocks from the shore, and bottle caps, cigarette butts and glass from the top of the beach near the wall. The stuff went into a hopper, which lifted and tilted and dumped the collection in piles. Pulled by a tractor, the surf rake cleaned about 10 percent of the beach in 20 minutes. And that included stops to demonstrate dumping, turning and other features. It will …

This is long overdue! I am a relatively new resident and just assumed when i moved here that a beach community would take care of their beaches. I have been so disappointed with the lack of attention paid to the beaches. As a taxpayer WITH children, I would love to see more of my tax money used to maintain the beaches.   more ›

Photo of Missing Kayaker Maryan Lisovich

Here is a photograph of the 23-year-old missing kayaker from Lynn.

Swampscott police released this photograph of missing kayaker Maryan Lisovich, 23, Sunday shortly after 8 pm. The Coast Guard suspended its water search for the Lynn man at sunset Sunday after 24 hours of looking for him from the air and on the water. He was last seen wearing no shirt and red trunks as he shoved off in a kayak from Fisherman's Beach on Saturday at 4 pm. Maryan was reported missing on Saturday at 5:30 pm. Ninety minutes later, at 7 pm, his blue kayak was found overturned in the surf in the area of Eisman's Beach. Swampscott police and firefighters will continue to look for the missing man through the night. A Coast Guard spokesman said that two to three years ago, a person they were searching for along the Massachusetts …
