Dec. 21, 2012 End of the World Drinks

Two Swampscott area restaurants will swing into the end-of-the-world spirit by serving special cocktails on Friday.

Here's to earth. Across the land on Dec. 21, the planet's last day soothsayers say, men and women will hop from bar stools and rise from chairs. They'll raise their champagne flutes, martini glasses and beers. And they'll toast the nice long planetary run we've had. About 4.5 billion years, scientists say.   Here's mud in your eye. And fire in the sky. But first, Dec. 21, end-of-the-world parties will spill from east to west. In Las Vegas one club’s customers will dress like dead celebrities and clink glasses holding Mayan's Blood cocktails. At least two Swampscott area restaurants will be serving doomsday drinks, too. If Dec. 21, 2012 was the World's End ...

Where would you want to be on Dec. 20, 2012?

  We wonder, where on earth would you want to spend Dec. 20 if the Large Hadron Collider scientific experiment or some such force was to tip the balance to the end of days on Dec. 21? Would it be Swampscott? Hawaii? A corn field in Iowa? We read that an online English bookmaker is offering odds for wagers on the EOW to come Friday. The standard line is 1,000,000,000 - 1. But patrons are invited to set their own line. The only item we can think of with higher odds is the Red Sox rehiring Bobby Valentine. Or Bill Belichick getting a job as a Wal-Mart greeter. Meanwhile, there are about 60 days until spring training in Ft. Myers. Ft. Myers, that might not be bad for Dec. 20.
