Wrestler Off to Terrific Start at New England Championships

Marblehead senior Sean Taylor, a captain on the combined Marblehead/Swampscott Black & Blue wrestling team, won his first two matches Friday at the New England High School Wrestling Championships.

  A historic season continues for the combined Marblehead/Swampscott High School wrestling program as senior Sean Taylor turned heads and pinned opponents on the first day of the New England championships in Providence, RI. The Marblehead senior, who wrestles in the heavyweight division, will square off against Donovan Lozado of Chicopee, the no. 2 seed from Massachusetts today, Saturday. On Friday, in his first match, the Marblehead heavyweight pinned John Ware of Manchester West, NH in the first period at about the one-minute mark. At the time it was the sixth fastest pin of the evening. Two Wrestlers Medal at Mass. All-State Wrestling Tournament

Taylor advances to New England Championship tournament; Powell ends career with 112 wins; 8th best 126-pounder in Mass.

Co-captains Sean Taylor and Jake Powell, who have been wrestling together since 4th grade, both placed at the 2013 MIAA All-State Championship last weekend.  Taylor, a Marblehead senior, placed 7th in the heavyweight class and will wrestle next weekend in the New England high school wrestling championship. Powell, a Swampscott senior, placed 8th in the 126-pound weight class in the two-day tournament that featured more than 200 of the Commonwealth’s best high school wrestlers. Taylor and Powell became for first two wrestlers from the Black & Blue team to place at the All-State tournament and Taylor became the first ever to move on to the New England tournament. Two Wrestlers Advance to Mass. All-State Wrestling Tournament

Two Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers advanced to the 2013 Massachusetts MIIA All-State wrestling tournament that takes place Friday and Saturday at Salem High School.

Jake Powell placed second in the 126-pound weight class at Division 3 State tournament and Sean Taylor placed sixth in the heavyweight class. Powell, who has placed first in the Division 3 North Sectional tournament, lost to Eric Reyes of Dedham by a score of 9-5. Powell fought well against Reyes, a four-time New England youth wrestling champion, but was unable to pin or score enough back points in the third period against the number one seed from the Division 3 Central division to turn the tide. Powell advanced to the championship match by defeating Jehu Barbee of Sabis with a pin at 1:32. Wrestlers Triumph at Sectionals

The Black and Blue wrestling team, a combined squad from Swampscott and Marblehead high schools, enjoyed their best day ever on Saturday in the Div. 3 Northern Sectional Tournament.

  The Swampscott-Marblehead wrestling team yesterday enjoyed its best day in the history of the program at the Division 3 North Sectional tournament. There were six place finishers out of 10 wrestlers competing. And Jake Powell (126) and Sean Taylor (285), both of whom are seniors and co-captains, become the first-ever two-time sectional champions for the Black & Blue wrestling team. Surprising everyone at 160, including his opponent in the semi-final with a nasty spladle, was senior Joe Mitlin, who took second place and fought well against a great wrestler in Boyle from Triton in his finals match. Congrats also belong to Ali Atallah, a 182-pound Marblehead junior, and Maleek Tiondre Newsome, a 170-pound Swampscott junior, who by winning …

Black & Bluers Medal at Big Red Tournament

Rookies Mark Rittiboon and Eugene Bromberg got their first-ever pins at the Big Red wrestling tournament; Co-captain Sean Taylor took third place and co-captain Jake Powell took first place.

  The Black & Blue wrestling team continued is winning ways Saturday at the Big Red high school wrestling tournament. First time wrestlers Mark Rittiboon, a sophomore wrestling at 195 pounds, and Eugene Bromberg, a senior wrestling at 220 pounds, got their first-ever pins during the day-long tournament at Tyngsborough High School. "I was very happy to see Boon and Eugene come away with wins,” said Michael Stamison, the team’s head coach. “Both being firsty-ear wrestlers, it's great for a coach to see results." The Swampscott-Marblehead high school wrestling team is seeking student-athletes who are interested in joining the team or learning more about the sport. If you are interested in attending a captain's practice or learning more about the sport, please contact Jake Powell, the team's captain, at jake.rpowell1@gmail.com.  Wrestling, according to NFL All-Star Roddy White and countless other NFL players, is an especially good sport for football players. "I'm a great NFL football player… because of the training I went through as a wrestler," says White. Black & Blue Wrestler Qualifies For All-States

Junior Jake Powell, 30-7 on the year, will wrestle a Burlington foe in his first match in Salem at the All-State tournament.

Swampscott junior Jake Powell took 5th place in the 113-pound weight class at the MIAA Division 3 State Wrestling tournament held this past weekend at Taconic Regional High School. Powell finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and advances, for the second time in his high school career, to the MIAA All-State Wrestling tournament, which will be held on Feb. 24-25 at Salem High School.   Marblehead junior Sean Taylor, the only other member of the “Black & Blue” wrestling team to advance to the Division 3 State Wrestling tournament, finished his 2011-12 season with a 1-2 record at the tournament.    Taylor, who was the No.2 seed in the heavyweight class, won his first match of the tournament …

Two Black and Blue Wrestlers Crowned D3 North Champs

The juniors now head to Div. 3 state tournament.

Sean Taylor and Jake Powell this weekend became the first juniors and just the third and fourth ever in the history of the Swampscott-Marblehead wrestling program to be crowned champions in the Division 3 North Sectional Wrestling Tournament. Taylor, a Marblehead junior who is ranked No. 2 among Division 3 heavyweights in the state, won the championship with pins at 41 seconds, 60 seconds and 5:19 in the quarters, semis and finals, respectively. Powell, a Swampscott junior, won the 113-pound championship in a hard-fought overtime match against Tom Funk of Pentucket, who was ranked as the 9th best 113-pound wrestler in the state. Black & Blue Wrestlers Pin Three Sachem/Vikings

The combined Swampscott/Marblehead wrestling squad lost the war but won several battles against a combined Saugus/Winthrop team.

  Four Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers shined in the team’s last dual meet of the year against Saugus-Winthrop last night. Swampscott sophomore Maleek Newsome, wrestling at 170 pounds, Marblehead junior Sean Taylor, wrestling in the heavyweight class, and Swampscott junior Jake Powell, wrestling at 113 pounds, all pinned their respective opponents. The Black & Blue team ultimately lost 31 to 18 to Saugus-Winthrop, but there were at least two bright spots as the team heads into the final tournaments of the 2011-12 season. One, Marblehead freshman Cam Budrow earned his first-ever victory wrestling in a junior varsity match that turned out to be one of the most exciting matches of the evening.
