Senior shot-putter Ny'Cole Young-Thomas was overjoyed Tuesday with her personal best throw that qualified her to compete in the state track and field meet.
The Big Blue girls track and field team defeated Gloucester April 30 at Upper Jackson, 85-51. But one of the victories within the victory was a senior's shot put throw of 30 feet 10 inches. That throw brought senior Ny'Cole Young-Thomas to her knees in elation and to tears in teammates' arms. Coach Peter Bush said Ny'Cole's eclipsing the 30 feet mark qualifies her for the state track meet. Not only that but the throw broke the barrier she has been trying to break since last year. She set the 30-foot mark as a goal for winter track and fell short. She set it again for spring, but was stuck in the 28-foot range. The proposal is scheduled for a vote at the next selectmen's meeting, Feb. 6.
Selectmen are scheduled to vote next week on a proposal to name the Upper Jackson track after Dave Whelan, a parent and Swampscott schools supporter who died in September. Dave's wife, Jean, his son, Trevor, and former Swampscott track coach Dom Finelli were in the audience Wednesday when School Committee member Marianne Hartmann presented the proposal to selectmen. Dave Whelan was a former School Committee chairman, town treasurer, track supporter and tireless advocate for Chapter 70 education funding for Swampscott. He spent some of his best days at the Upper Jackson track watching the Big Blue teams and his son Trevor compete, Hartmann said. Upper Jackson is located behind the high school off The Greenway. Three Big Blue track athletes will compete in the All-States this weekend.
The Big Blue Distance squad took the track in three separate races on Saturday in Pembroke, nicknamed "Track Town Massachusetts" after Pembroke's many state titles. Sophomore Matt Mahoney started things off for the Big Blue, running the two mile in the first of two heats. Many runners took off to the front of the pack at the start of the race, going out much faster than Mahoney intended on running. Remaining calm, Mahoney got into a groove and began running consistent 75 second laps, which put him on pace for a 10:00 two-mile time. Slowly moving up through the field, Mahoney eventually found himself on the shoulder of the leader. Mahoney did not stay there long, passing the runner while continuing to run even splits. The boys and girls' track teams earned second place finishes Saturday at the NEC championships at the Manning Bowl in Lynn. Meanwhile the Swampscott High girls tennis team gained further momentum for the upcoming tournament by blanking Danvers 5-0.
Swampscott High girls' tennis beat Danvers 5-0 Friday upping their record to 10-2 on the season. Freshman Anna Raptunovich played at No. 1 and won her match 6-1, 2-1. Her opponent was injured and unable to continue playing. Senior Rita Tsokanis played at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-0. Senior Tatum Pederson played at No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-0. The first doubles team of Ashley Petras and Veronica Pyatigorskaya won their match 6-0, 6-1. The second doubles team of Alicia Coyle and Danica Villanueva won their match 6-0, 6-1. Varsity track athletes from two strong programs competed in the rain at Upper Jackson Field Tuesday, with Peabody scoring victories over the Swampscott boys and girls.

We had some great performances and it is a direct result of the focus and hard work during practice. The high school senior sets his sights on goals and takes the steps to reach them.
Trevor Whelan sweats the small stuff. He's organized and chases goals, too. It's minutes before the Swampscott High senior and indoor-track captain joins teammates for practice the first week in January. He's wearing spotless boots, neat rolled-up jeans and a wrinkle-free jersey. Nearby, on the field house's rubber track, teammates train — doing sprints, runs and distance running. Some look over and smile when they pass Trevor. He has never run a 5-minute mile in his four-year track career. “I’m hoping to break five," he says. That would make him the fifth miler on the team to break that barrier. He ran his best time the day before, a 5:06, so he needs to shave seven seconds to join the Big Blue mile club. Both boys and girls Big Blue track teams turned in impressive performances in their meets against Salem Thursday. They ran hard to the very end of races at the end of their season. Only post-regular-season meets remain including the State Meet in February at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. On Thursday at the Swampscott High field house the boys won their meet, 70-15; and the girls won theirs, 62-23. Both teams competed with grit. Coach Joe Tenney was pleased to see the athletes push themselves and encourage teammates as the season wound down. A highlight was the mile run by Trevor Whelan. Well said, Kevin and Mary. The naming of the track is certainly a fitting tribute to Dave.
