Assessors Make Tax Rate Official

The new tax rate is up half a percent from this year.

The Swampscott Board of Assessors held an emergency meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss and sign the new tax bill, which increases taxes by about half a percent. The board had met last week to vote on the new tax rate and were unable to sign off earlier this week due to the snowstorm. They called an emergency meeting with less than 24 hours notice to discuss and sign the tax bill. Next year's property tax-rate burden is the same as this year's -- 175 percent for businesses and 100 percent for residences. Next year's residential tax rate is $16.60 per $1,000 property valuation, up 12 cents from the current $16.48; and the business tax rate is $30.80, up 22 cents from the current $30.80. Maybe the town could actually remove the snow, the next time we get a storm. Just like very city and town that surrounds us, and pay less in taxes. JMO   more ›
