Senior Wrestlers End Dual Meet Season on a High Note

Four of five seniors win their final home matches. Mitlin, Taylor, and Powell named to the NEC All-Star team.

As senior nights go, it was a memorable one for the Swampscott-Marblehead wrestling team. The team defeated Peabody 44-18 in its final dual meet of the season, ending the year with its best record in years. What’s more, four of five Black & Blue seniors won their final home matches.  The team, which didn’t win a single dual meet last year, finished the 2012-3 season with a 6-14 record. "I couldn't be happier by our boys' performances last night, it was such a great way to end the dual-meet season," said Michael Stamison, the team’s head coach. "All congratulations should go to the seniors who have done an amazing job of recruiting and retaining the boys on the team, and to my assistants Chris Jacobs, Rich Maestranzi and Igor Babushkin. …

Four Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers took home medals and awards from the annual Northeastern Conference-Cape Ann League (NEC-CAL) wrestling tournament this past weekend held at Triton Regional High School. Sean Taylor, co-captain and Marblehead senior, placed second in the heavyweight division, after losing 3-2 in the championship match to Andrew Kibarian of Lynnfield/North Reading (LNR). "Tough one to lose, but, we know what we need to work on, and we will absolutely see Kibarian again on Feb. 9 at Melrose for sectionals" said Head Coach Mike Stamison. Joe Mitlin, a Swampscott senior (160), and Maleek Newsome, a Swampscott junior (170) both placed third in their respective weight classes.  For Mitlin and Newsome, it was the first time in…

Two Wrestlers Medal at Weymouth Tournament

Team travels to Salem for its next dual meet on Jan. 23, 7 pm

The Black & Blue went to the Weymouth High School wrestling tournament on Saturday and the team might make it an annual event given what happened against some of the state's best grapplers. Two Swampscott-Marlblehead wrestlers, co-captains Sean Taylor and Jake Powell, came home with medals and a trophy. With a mouth stuffed with gauze to stop the bleeding from a bit tongue, and down 6-0 going into the third period, Powell, a Swampscott senior, came back to win the 126-pound championship match with a pin over Colin Harty of Plymouth South. And Taylor, a Marblehead senior, won third place in the heavyweight bracket by pinning the No. 9 ranked heavyweight in the state, Shaun Duncombe of Plymouth South, as time ran out in the third period. Beverly Defeats Black & Blue Wrestling Team 30-12

Swampscott-Marblehead wrestling team seeking donations for a raffle to be held on senior night on Jan. 30.

The little engine that could, did all that it could. But it was not enough to overcome a much larger team. The Swampscott-Marblehead wrestling team lost to Beverly 30-12 Wednesday night in an away dual meet, with just senior co-captains Sean Taylor and Jake Powell scoring points. "Obviously, we all know of the excellent football teams Beverly has had over the last three to four years, but the coach of their wrestling team, Mark Thomas, has done a great job with the wrestling program in terms of recruitment and training some really great wrestlers,” said Michael Stamison, the head coach of the team. “We were happy to be a part of their senior night." Taylor (285) earned six points by pinning his opponent in the first 12 seconds of his …

Black & Blue Win Streak Ends

Bright spots: Joe Mitlin, Maleek Newsome and Mark Rittaboon all had outstanding wins by fall, and Senior Captain Jake Powell inched closer to 100 wins with No. 99 with a pin of his own

The Swampscott-Marblehead wrestling team had one of those dual meets Thursday night that could have gone – as they say - either way.  Unfortunately, it went the way of Danvers/Hamilton-Wenham (DHW), which defeated the Black & Bluers 43-36. Swampscott-Marblehead wrestling team’s three-meet win streak also ended with the loss to DHW, a dual meet that saw plenty of lead changes. The first match of the dual meet set the tone for what was to follow. Ali Atallah, a Marblehead junior wrestling at 182 pounds, lost a match that was closer than the final score of 10-5. Down 4-2 heading into the third period, Atallah fought back with an escape (one point) and a takedown (two points), but it was not enough to overcome the lead his DHW opponent had …
