No Luck for Big Blue Hockey

Westfield Bombers Find Their Target, 4-1

Marino, Carman Haunt Salem in Swampscott 7-1 Win

Nunzio Morretti and Chris Carman each scored a pair of goals and goaltender Tristan Bradley backboned a strong defensive effort as Swampscott cruised to a 7-1 win over Salem at Salem State University’s Rockett Arena Wednesday night. Both Carman’s goals led to a 2-0 Swampscott lead after one period, and the Blue never looked back.   Corey Carmody and Ryan Cresta added second period goals, and Joe Silva notched a score between Marino’s third period pair.  Rob Serino had three assists on the night, and Noah Maercklein a pair to pace Swampscott. Hardknock Hockey: Marblehead Over Swampscott

Marblehead defeated Swampscott 6-3 in the teams' first meeting of the season on Saturday.

  Marblehead rode a second period goal spree, scoring three in several minutes, to defeat Swampscott Saturday evening, 6-3 in action at Salem State University's Rockett Arena. Marblehead got goals from Trip Franzese (2), Tom Koopman (2), Matt Koopman and Eric Powers. Marblehead is 2-1 on the season and will compete in the Gloucester tournament this week. Swampscott's tallies came from Noah Maercklein — his first varsity goal — Nunzio Morretti and Robert Serino. Marblehead Coach Bob Jackson said it was a roller coaster of a game. The lesson coming away is for the team to continue working hard when they lead in a game. That being said he credited Swampscott with coming out and playing hard after the second period. Swampscott Hockey Gets Wayland in Tourney

The puck drops Thursday night at 8 for Big Blue's first-round game.

  Big Blue hockey, 8-8-4, skates against the Wayland Warriors, 10-7-3, in the first round of the Division III North hockey tournament. The puck drops Thursday, March 1, at 8 pm at the Stoneham Arena. The last time the Swampscott skaters hit the ice, Feb. 18, the game ended in a 2-2 tie against Marblehead. The MIAA announced its brackets for the tournament on Saturday. Four Blue Hockey Players All-Stars

Meanwhile the team awaits word on its tournament opponent.

  This article was submitted by Big Blue hockey Coach Gino Faia. The annual NEC North/South Hockey All-Star game will be played Saturday at Salem State College. A skills competition will begin at 5:30 pm followed by the game at 6:30 pm.  Swampscott's all-stars include senior forwards Gino Cresta and Matt Videtta joined by junior defensemen Trevor Massey and Chris Carman.  Gino Cresta was also chosen to the NEC South All-League Team at forward, and was voted the South MVP. Trevor Massey joins Cresta on the South All-League Team. Massey was chosen as a defenseman. The Swampscott High hockey team awaits word on who their opponent will be in the first round of the Div. 3 state tournament. The MIAA is expected to announce its tournament …

  1) Newsbit of the Day: The Historical Commission want selectmen's approval to form a Historic District Study Committee. To that end, individual commission members will reach out to individual selectmen; the commission will create a question-and-answer document including info on the function, benefits and drawbacks of historic districts; and the commission will meet with the board at a regular selectmen's meeting.  2) Swampscott Scholars:  James Hollabaugh, son of James and Pamela Hollabaugh of Swampscott, graduated with a major in Performance/Music Education from Ithaca College's School of Music. The degree was awarded in December 2011. Ithaca College is in New York's Finger Lakes region, the college is home to 6,100 undergraduate and …

Gino Cresta and Matt Videtta Hat Tricks Power Swampscott Past Revere, 11-5

  Swampscott exploded for six goals in the second period—four in the first three minutes—to break open a tight game, then kept a scrappy Revere team at bay on the way an 11-5 win at Revere Wednesday night.   The win elevated the Blue to 8-7-3 and bolstered their position for a spot in post-season tourney play. Captain Gino Cresta and Matt Videtta each scored hat tricks and each added three assists to power the Blue offense.  Cresta triggered a Swampscott eruption just over a minute into the second period to give Swampscott a 3-1 lead.  Then, like lightening striking in the next two minutes, Chris Carman, Videtta, and Chris Dandreo tallied and the score was 6-1 before the new ice was even scraped.  Revere answered with a goal by Drew Lauria…

Gallery: Swampscott Hockey Rockets to Deep Freeze Tourney Final

The Big Blue soundly defeated St. Clements 12-1 Monday at East Boston.

  The Big Blue continued their Deep Freeze hockey tourney domination by soundly defeating St. Clements 12-1 Monday at the East Boston rink. Swampscott advances to the championship game tonight at 8. Blue captured last year's Deep title by edging Newton South by a goal, 3-2.
