Swampscott's interim superintendent for the next school year has responsibilities to tend to in his current interim role before he starts in Swampscott.
The School Committee has appointed Assistant Superintendent Pam Angelakis to be acting superintendent from July 1 - July 14. Angelakis will hold the position down until the district's interim superintendent for the next school year, Garry Murphy, starts work July 15, said School Committee Chairman Rick Kraft. Kraft said that Murphy needs to stay in Wakefield to work with its new superintendent on the transition until then. Before Garry Murphy took the Wakefield interim post, he was interim superintendent at Hillsboro-Deering — last year — and an educational consultant for Arlington, Nashoba Valley, Groton-Dunstable and Swamspcott between 2005-2010. He retired in 2005 after 13 years as superintendent for the Triton Regional School …
At a time when Swampscott has hired its interim superintendent and prepares to fill the permanent postion, Marblehead hired Maryann Perry, a Leominster deputy superintendent
As the deputy superintendent for the Leominster schools, Maryann Perry worked under four superintendents in seven years and learned something different from each. One of several lessons she learned from Dr. Anthony Bent, an interim superintendent for only one year, was that he always kept his door open. The other superintendents always closed their office doors. But Bent insisted that he and Perry keep their doors open. With offices directly across the hall from one another, they worked well together as a leadership team. Now as Marblehead's next school superintendent, Perry plans to always keep the door to the superintendent's office open. The petite dynamo, who laughs often, also promised to keep her sense of humor as she leads the staff…

The interview is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Swampscott High School.
Today at 5 p.m. a candidate for interim superintendent will interview in public before the School Committee at the high school. That candidate is Garry Murphy. He is well suited to meet the district's needs, and is the lone finalist for the interim position, said Rick Kraft, a member of both the School Committee member and interim search panel. Murphy was interim superintendent at Hillsboro-Deering last year and an educational consultant for Arlington, Nashoba Valley, Groton-Dunstable and Swamspcott between 2005-2010. He retired in 2005 after 13 years as superintendent for the Triton Regional School District. He will come to the committee recommended by the search panel. If Monday's interview goes well, the plan is to bring Murphy's …

Turnover in our schools.
The announcement this week that our high school principal, Layne Millington, has resigned to become principal of Marblehead High brings an opportunity for us to learn from the past and improve the process for selecting and retaining our next high school principal. There are many things that will always remain outside our control, but other factors we can and should control. We have an opportunity here. First, we are hearing quite a bit about turnover. People are wondering why Swampscott has so much. Is it a problem unique to Swampscott or part of trend that is occurring in towns and cities across America? If so, should we conduct searches or grow talent from within? Turnover is the new reality Before we go too far down that road, we need…

School Committee members thanked departing high school Principal Layne Millington after learning he has taken a job as Marblehead High School's new principal.
School Committee members wished the best to departing Swampscott High Principal Layne Millington at the start of their meeting Wednesday. The committee also looked ahead. "We'll do the best we can to get a leader at the high school," said member Ted Delano. Committee Chairman Larry Beaupre thanked Millington for his work, noting that if Swampscott couldn't have him as its principal it was good know that he would be working in the town next door. Patch will report on the district's plans to replace Millington as they become available. Marblehead Superintendent of Schools Greg Maass told teachers and staff on Wednesday afternoon that Layne Millington would be the new principal at Marblehead High School. Millington, formerly the assistant …

Swampscott High Principal Layne Millington is a finalist for principal jobs at two nearby high schools.
Swampscott High School Principal Layne Millington is one of three finalists for principal positions at both Peabody Veterans Memorial High School and Marblehead High School. Marblehead Superintendent Greg Maass is expected to announce the new principal on Monday, said Louise Genualdo, director of human resources for Marblehead schools. The other two finalists are Deb Heaton, Marblehead High's interim principal, and Edward Rozmiarek, Lowell High headmaster. The Marblehead principal search started in January when a screening committee recommended eight applicants to an interview committee. The interview committee conducted interviews and narrowed the field to four finalists. One of them subsequently accepted a position elsewhere. The …

In addition, the district plans to spend about $85,000 — based on an annual salary — for an interim superintendent
Superintendent Lynne Celli is scheduled to earn $85,000, or half her current $170,000 salary, in her new position as executive superintendent for special projects. The superintendent announced her new role at Wednesday's School Committee meeting. The superintendent said the change was initiated by the School Committee but she was amenable to it since it is consistent with her future plans. After the meeting, when asked why the change was taking place, both the superintendent and the chairman of the School Committee, Larry Beaupre, declined to say any more than what was presented in the superintendent's statement. The School Committee released a statement of its own on Thursday. You will find it at the bottom of this post. Also, you will …

Swampscott Superintendent Lynne Celli announced on Wednesday that she will assume a part-time position with the School District starting July 1.
Lynne Celli will no longer be Swampscott's fulltime superintendent after June 30. She will remain in her current position until then but starting July 1, she will work for the district in a half-time position as executive superintendent for special projects, the superintendent said at Wednesday night's School Committee meeting. The School Committee established the position in a vote on Wednesday. In the coming weeks the district will begin searching for an interim superintendent to fullfill the regular day-to-day operations starting July 1. In her new role Superintendent Celli will focus on projects including plans to meet the district's elementary school building needs. As of June 30, the superintendent will have been in her post for …

Superintendent Lynne Celli was one of three keynote speakers who spoke on Monday, the opening day of the three-day Education and Development Conference.
Superintendent of Schools Lynne Celli is in Bangkok, Thailand this week talking about American education and learning about Asian education. She said yesterday in a phone interview that she hopes to bring back ideas to help Swampscott students. Between 150 and 200 administrators, master's degree students and others from around the globe are exchanging ideas at the March 5-7 Education and Development Conference 2012. She and a fellow superintendent and a doctoral candidate were the keynote speakers Monday. They talked about the educational advancement of primary and secondary students, the superintendent said. Her focus was on engagement — the ways in which cooperation, advocacy, communication and shared decision-making advance learning. …

School Committee members want the district to do a better job of communicating to parents.
School Committee members say communication is a critical item among Superintendent Lynne Celli’s goals for 2011-12. On Wednesday, Vice Chairman Larry Beaupre said the committee does not want parents to stand up at committee meetings saying they are not being told about things that are going on at the schools. “Like tonight,” he said. He was referring to a parent who was concerned that details were hard to come by after a middle school teacher was placed on administrative leave at the end of the school year. At an earlier meeting, June 22, several parents stood up and said they were unhappy about changes to the high school music program. School Committee members were unaware of the changes. Regarding the middle school situation, the …
