Fantastic Season for the U12 Screaming Eagles

The boys soccer team developed into a well-oiled machine.

We are Screaming Eagles - a division three Swampscott U12 soccer team. We (Greg Gutin and Adam Roth) were privileged to coach this team for the past three seasons. During this time, the team made significant progress and moved up three levels, thanks to the players' drastically improving skills. This gave us an opportunity to face teams of higher skill each season. Although our first two seasons were good, and we always managed to be in the middle of our group’s competition, this past fall season held the most significance for us. Our team had five wins, two losses, and one tie. Our last game was especially important as we faced the North Andover team for the second time this season.  We did lose that first game with North Andover’s team…

Photo Gallery: Swampscott Blue Raiders Battle Pentucket for Tie

The U12 boys' soccer team grinded out a 1-1 tie on Saturday in Groveland.

Ellen Goldberg submitted the game summary and photos. To see more oh her work check out her gallery here. Brady Whelan knocked in what would be the equalizer Saturday, scoring the Swampscott Blue Raiders' lone goal after a breakaway on the Pentucket net. The Swampscott U12 boys soccer team tied Pentucket Venum, 1-1, in the hard fought game in Groveland. The Blue Raiders starters played the entire game without a break since the team had no substitutes available. The coach split goaltending duties between two players, each playing a half in the net and a half running the field. The goalies and defenders protected their goal, turning away numerous Pentucket scoring chances. This was the Blue Raiders' third game of the season. Their opening …

Photos: Girls Soccer Blanks Lynn English 5-0

The Big Blue passed and shot the ball with precision Friday in wet conditions at Upper Jackson.

The Big Blue girls soccer team ran, passed and scored in the rain. After their 5-0 win Friday against Lynn English some of them were singing in the rain. The wet and cool conditions on their home turf at Upper Jackson didn't deter the players' passing or enthusiasm. The win pushed the Blue's record to 4 wins 1 loss and 2 ties. Coach Francesco Recchia was most pleased with the team's consistent passing. By sharing and maintaining possession of the ball they created scoring opportunities, capitalizing on many of them. The girls knocked in four goals in the first half and one in the second. Leah Dawley, Erin Cassidy, Melinda Wilson, Mackenzie Robertson and Lauren Sullivan got the goals. Goalkeeper Samantha Rizzo made about 8 saves. The …

Temporary Lights Coming to Upper Jackson Field

The lights will allow for soccer after dark and relieve the field-space crunch in the wake of the Grown Ups 2 construction at Phillips Park.

Temporary lighting will soon be installed at Upper Jackson Field to accommodate high school soccer practices and games throughout the fall. Columbia Pictures is paying for the temporary lights, the recreation director said. Use of Upper Jackson, located behind Swampscott High School, after sundown is needed because of reduced field space at Phillips Park due to Grown Ups 2 filming, said Swampscott Recreation Director Danielle Strauss. The movie used the practice football field and half of the neighboring all-purpose field for its sound stage, storage and stunt work. Neither the practice football field nor the half of the adjoining all-purpose field nor the Charlotte Road field in the far corner of Phillips Park will be ready for use this…

Why not use the big diamond field behind the Middle School? It has lights, parking and bathrooms. The soccer people may be able to open the Snack shack and sell some drinks to make money. They use the bowl for soccer during the fall so I don't think there is an issue using the big diamond. As far as I know, there is no one using it for baseball. At least the town would save money from the rental …   more ›

Sculpins Repeat As Indoor Champions

The Sculpins shut down their opponents and triumphed in shoot-outs.

This article was submitted by Christian Lau. During the regular season, indoor soccer is all about goals. They come quickly and often. But it is a drastically different game in the playoffs. It becomes a defensive test where no team wants to give up the deciding goal that sends you home. No team knows this better that the Swampscott Sculpins. The Sculpins, a U12 boys soccer team, recently repeated as the Soccer Etc B Division champion without scoring a single goal in the playoffs. That's because for the second straight season, the Sculpins did not allow a playoff goal to be scored against them and for the second straight time they won the championship with an exciting shoot-out after regulation time ended at 0-0.  The key for Swampscott …

Shock and All Thunder …

Contributed by U14, Blue Thunder coaches: Chris Bendicksen and Michael Sheffer

The Swampscott U14 Girls Blue Thunder traveled north Saturday to Pentucket for the much anticipated rematch of  the first game of season where the  Swampscott Blue Thunder prevailed in a 1-0 slugfest. That Sept. 10th  game clincher was a left footed ball delivered  from the deep left corner by Annie Norton that stunned the Bulldog’s keeper. Going into the rematch, Pentucket has not lost another game as the Blue  Thunder had scored the only goal against them in the previous four games.   The Blue Thunder were coming off a major 2-1 upset of Andover the previous week.   In the Oct. 15th Andover game, the Blue Thunder delivered their first bolt in the early minutes of the game when center mid Ellie Wright delivered a perfect thru ball to a …

Blue Wrap

Big Blue girls soccer and golf teams picked up impressive wins this week.

This article is from Big Blue coach Francesco Recchia We lost to Danvers 2-1. It was a tale of two halves though. We came out completely flat against them in the first and they took advantage of it by scoring both of their goals in the first 15 minutes. We went into halftime down 2-0 and I made some changes to our formation based on what I saw from Danvers and we came out flying. We completely dominated the second half, but had problems finishing. Our goal came on a penalty shot from Kelly Birchmore with about 15 minutes left. Bridget Genoversa-Wong had 8 saves. Yes we lost, but it was good to see us fight right till the end. We never gave up and that actually carried over into our St. Mary's game on Saturday. We won 3-0 and it was our …
