Seniors' Halloween Fun

A senior citizen bash that was a monster of a mash.

By Betty Dean Holmes Rod said at the seniors Halloween party he was a dancing fool. He danced up and down the aisles with an assortment of ladies. But the very best was a lady who uses a walker. She wore a headband with an Indian feather and a beige fringed tunic.  Rod got her up on her feet, and held her so they could dance. The smile on her face warmed my heart. I don't suppose she dared to dream she would ever dance again.  I saw lots of wonderful costumes. There were several devils, a couple of cats, a wonderful Batman, cowboys, several witches, of which I was one. I turned my cane into a witch's broom, using a fringed brown paper bag. There were several gypsies, an Army guy, and I can't remember all the others. Oh, yes, one fellow …

Zoning Board Votes It Has No Jurisdiction to Revoke Fish House Porch Permit

Neighbors oppose Yacht Club Adding Porch to Historic Building

A group opposed to the porch at the back of the Fish House learned last week that they would have to wait to press their case with the Zoning Board of Appeals. The Friends of the Fish House want the building permit revoked for the completed second-floor porch at the historic Swampscott Yacht Club on Humphrey Street. The Yacht Club, which uses the second floor of the Fish House, has finished building the porch, which is an extension to the building. The porch is 25 feet long and eight feet wide. The oceanside, exterior wall was moved four feet back to widen the porch. To the chagrin of many neighbors of the Fish House in the audience at the Aug. 24 meeting, the zoning board voted four to one that it did not have jurisdiction to consider the…

Musings: A Column on Local Culture

The Hooker's Daughter

A Swampscott woman pens her memoir.

Some people have difficult upbringings, so difficult that once they escape and march forward into better lives they don’t look back for a long time, if ever. In Dale Stanten’s case, she waited over 40 years. She had moved to Swampscott, raised her family, got an RN degree, worked as a psychiatric nurse, and then started and ran her own successful travel business. The decision to share her story didn’t come all at once. “As I matured [my childhood] was not something I ever wanted to write about,” she says. Then she realized that she “wanted to tell my children,” who were in their 20’s at the time and had no inkling of their mother’s history. So, about 12 years ago, she joined the Creative Writing Class at the Swampscott Senior Center. At …
