The high school hosted its annual tribute to curiosity — its science, technology, engineering and math family night.
Curiosity ruled STEM Family Night on Thursday, an evening of science, technology, engineering and math exploration. Hundreds of curious minded visitors explored 22 stations in the atrium and cafeteria at Swampscott High. So, why did kids sweep away kelp to see hermit, rock and spider crabs crawling at the bottom of a water-filled bin in the cafeteria? Curiosity. Why did a crab pinch one of the curious hands that picked it up. Curiosity. It was a curious crab, said Dave Winchester, who teaches a summer marine program for curious youth at Northeastern University's Marine Science Center in Nahant. The blue lobster Dave brought was curious, too. It flopped its antenna to explore new surroundings when lifted from its watery bin and shown to …

On Tuesday high school students showed a few hundred visitors what they are learning in the high school science, technology, engineering and math program.
Swampscott High's atrium and field house became a playhouse for gadgets and ideas Tuesday at Family STEM Night. Upstairs and downstairs high school students demonstrated the versatility of science, technology, engineering and math across the curriculum. Robotic soccer, floor sailing and catapult demonstrations in the field house generated laughter and interest from younger kids. The demonstrations showed parents how STEM studies have a place in classrooms including those where students learn about robotics, physical science and history. Susan Haggerty's students build scale models of catapults when studying ancient history. On Tuesday children catapulted and caught plastic golf balls. Back in the days of the Roman Empire, the sling-like …

STEM Family night, Tuesday from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the high school, will present hands-on activities that showcase science, technology, engineering and math skills being honed at the school.
Students will showcase science and technology projects Tuesday at the high school, leading families through health, art and chemistry activities among others. STEM Family night runs from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the atrium and the gym. Twenty students will be stationed at 12 different posts. Families can learn about ancient architecture, have their heart rate monitored, watch the Cable Club reel, and see an art installation. They can also learn about volume and pressure and see robotic soccer, basketball shooting and sailing. These are hands-on activities. STEM Coordinator Brandy Wilbur said the STEM program excites students about science, technology, engineering and math. That excitement inspires them to think about STEM-related college …
