Academy Awards 2013: Watch Oscars on TV and Swampscott Connections

Here's another Swampscott connection: Swampscott High graduate Bryan Buckley is up for an Oscar in the Best Live-Action Short Film category.

The Academy Awards are Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. The ceremonies will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 foreign countries. One of the nominees is Swampscott High graduate Bryan Buckley nominated for his 17-minute film Asad, about a child refugee from a war-torn fishing village in Somalia, according to Cinemasalem.com  Buckley is best known for his commercials, especially Super Bowl commercials, of which he has directed over 40. He is following up Asad, his first narrative film, by directing his first feature film, “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” starring Reese Witherspoon, according to a Lynn Item article. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced dates for 2013 Oscars ceremony and nominations announcement. According to this announcement, The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Jan. 10, 2013, and the Oscar telecast will be presented on Feb. 24. Academy Awards 2013: The Whole List of Oscar Nominations

The Feb. 24, televised award ceremony will be hosted by the producer of a film, Ted, that was filmed — parts of of it — in Swampscott.

We've got a rundown of all the 2013 Oscar nominations below.  Also, we will be running Oscar- and film-related features this week on Swampscott Patch. There's a bit of a North Shore connection here — The comedy "Ted," which is up for best original song, was partially filmed in Swampscott. Director Steven Spielberg's historical drama "Lincoln" earned a leading 12 nominations Thursday for the 85th Annual Academy Awards, followed by Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" with 11, while the musical, "Les Miserables," directed by Tom Hooper, and David O. Mark Wahlberg Movie Ted Set For Release July 13

The movie remains in post-production according to an NBCUniversal spokesman.

  Academy Awards night and Oscar acceptance speeches will get some local people thinking about Swampscott's shoulder brush with Hollywood in 2011. Film crews were in town the first week in May shooting scenes for the movie Ted starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. The movie remains in post production and scenes are not finalized, according to an NBCUniversal spokesman. The movie is set for release July 13, he said. Back in May film crews were shooting at 441 Atlantic Ave., a 10,000-square-foot, contemporary home on Preston Beach. Scenes included a big party.
