Spoil the moms in your life today. Some people consider Mother’s Day to be a trumped up holiday where prices are cranked up at restaurants that know everyone will be scrambling for a special meal not cooked or cleaned up by a mother. Certainly some of that is true: people rush out for cards and there are roses for sale on the sides of the road for those who forgot. But I say that even if it is trumped up or “Hallmarked” it is still useful to take the day to consider all that mothers do. In fact, my biggest complaint is that it is only one day. A Swampscott mom, the new president of the Salem Swampscott Youth Hockey League, and other moms want to grow the league through player development.
These hockey moms are less on the sidelines than the front lines. In the male dominated world of hockey these moms have major roles, filling five leadership positions in the Salem/Swampscott Youth Hockey League. They are league President Carmen Henriques of Swampscott, Clerk Lisa Lavoie of Salem, Treasurer Linda Gagnon of Salem, operations head Bridget McGuiness of Lynn and fundraiser Patty Remon of Salem. The female presence comes with new ideas, determination and anxiety. Carmen became league president in June and, several weeks ago, was nervous about an upcoming meeting — the first district meeting, a gathering for representatives from area youth hockey leagues.
