MOMents

MOMents — A Time For Reason

Turnover in our schools.

The announcement this week that our high school principal, Layne Millington, has resigned to become principal of Marblehead High brings an opportunity for us to learn from the past and improve the process for selecting  and retaining our next high school principal. There are many things that will always remain outside our control, but other factors we can and should control. We have an opportunity here. First, we are hearing quite a bit about turnover.  People are wondering why Swampscott has so much. Is it a problem unique to Swampscott or part of trend that is occurring in towns and cities across America? If so, should we conduct searches or grow talent from within? Turnover is the new reality Before we go too far down that road, we need…

JCC Triathletes Ready to Race May 13

The JCC's popular Triathlon by the Sea sold out in less than two hours, or about twice the time it took last year's first-place finisher to complete the course.

Athletes are gearing up for the JCC’s Triathlon by the Sea on Sunday, May 13th.  The race has become so popular, it sold out in less than two hours this year and the waiting list is growing by the day. The beautiful seaside course attracts athletes from around the country.  The J’s triathlon is known as a great race for both rookies and more experienced triathletes.  Last year’s competition attracted people 11 to 70 years old! “From my very first one, I was hooked,” said 53-year-old Judy Lopes of Lynn. “If you’re going to do a TRI for the first time, this is the best to start with.” Swampscott police officer Kevin Reen took 1st place in last year’s Triathlon by the Sea with a time of 59:26. This will be his 8th year racing with the J. “…

VIDEO: Nunzio Morretti's Game-Tying Goal

Nunzio Morretti fronted the Marblehead goalie and redirected Chris Carman's blast into the net Saturday night pulling Swampscott even with Marblehead — 2-2.

Marblehead And Swampscott Battle Even

The final score between the rivals was 2-2 in an exciting hockey game Saturday at Rockett Arena.

The hockey game had hard checking, shots on goal and solid play from both goalies. The game had end-to-end play, glass-shaking hits and the packed crowd on its feet. It had the excitement that Marblehead/Swampscott contests generate. And in the end it had a tie score, 2-2. In the final minutes of the final period, Nunzio Morretti of Swampscott redirected a puck past Marblehead goalie Mike Harper. That made the score 2-2. But throughout the game at Salem State's O'Keefe Center, Harper turned away point-blank shots. "Mike Harper played real well in net," Marblehead Coach Bob Jackson said. The Magicians grabbed the early lead on a score by Trevor Jones. Swampscott's Trevor, Trevor Massey, tied the game at 1-1. Marblehead went ahead 2-1 on a…

'T' Cuts Would Strap and Strand

More than 100 speakers told MBTA officials on Tuesday that plans to hike fares and eliminate buses and trains will hurt people at every stop on the economic line.

Proposed MBTA service cuts and fare hikes deliver a body blow to people across the board: the elderly, working poor, wheelchair bound, Boston bound and business people, alike. That was the plea to 'T' officials Tuesday in the auditorium at Lynn City Hall. Almost 300 people, many of them bundled in winter jackets and topped with winter hats, stood at the edges and sat hunkered in their seats — but erupted when speakers struck a chord. Citizens and elected officials alike took to the microphone and hammered away at familiar refrains. Among them: eliminating bus routes to Swampscott, Marblehead and Nahant will leave citizens without transportation to doctors' offices and hospitals; to cultural activities; and to work. Lloyd Caswell, 67, a …

Looking For Larry, a Lost Boston Terrier

The owner thinks Larry might have roamed from Marblehead to Swampscott.

The following information was submitted by Amy Budrow: Our dog, Larry, has run away and we are begging for help to find him. He is a 6-year-old Boston Terrier from Marblehead. He has a black collar with tags. Unfortunately, the number on the tag is no longer in service. He disappeared Monday morning at approximately 1 a.m. from the Heritage/Village Street area in Marblehead. He was last seen near Devereux Beach. "His home is on Colgate Road so we are hoping he is either at someone's home or in the area. If anyone finds him or sees him they can call me at 617-590-2133," Amy said. He is very shy and timid so we are really hoping for the best.  We think he might have gone down towards Atlantic Avenue. If he just kept walking, he would be in…
