Swampscott Lifeguards Are Here

Lifeguard Josh Forman shares his experiences about guarding for the beaches in town.

If your perception about Swampscott lifeguards is similar to the lifeguards in the former television hit show, “Baywatch”, you couldn’t find someone more opposite of this stereotype than Josh Forman. This 20-year-old sophomore at Bard College is an avid reader of the New York Times and Boston Globe. He is interested in pursuing politics and history in the future. Forman, like some of his fellow guards, became certified at the age of 16 and started working at the Jewish Community Center (JCC). “I became a lifeguard because I really like to swim and this just seemed like a natural venue for me,” he said. “Lifeguarding seemed like a good way to make money in a more fun and hands-on manner.” Like most people, Forman likes and dislikes certain …

Senior guard James Duffy shares his experiences about working for the town of Swampscott.

Many lifeguards have nightmares about having to save a life but this Swampscott guard jumps for joy at the thought. James Duffy, a 19-year-old senior guard, doesn’t shy away at the notion of having to rescue someone.   “I became a lifeguard because I like the aspect of being able to save someone,” Duffy said. “I am also a really good swimmer so I figured I’d put it to good use.” Duffy is a sophomore at the University of Rhode Island and has a double major in geological oceanography and film. “When I get older I want to go down to the bottom of the ocean and film all that’s down there,” he said. Max Gold, the newest Swampscott lifeguard, shares his first impressions of guarding on the beaches.

Swampscott beachgoers should feel extra safe this summer because this year’s newest lifeguard comes with quite a bit of experience. Max Gold is one of the few lifeguards in Swampscott that already has put his lifeguarding skills to use and has a few saves under his belt. “I haven’t saved anyone here at the beaches so far this year," Gold said. "But I’ve had a few saves at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in the past." Gold, an 18-year-old sophomore at the University of Colorado Boulder, began his lifeguarding career at the JCC at 16 years old. “I became a lifeguard initially because I thought it would be a fun and stress-free job,” Gold said. “I also wanted to have the ability of saving someone’s life and knowing that I was one of the few…
