President, Congress have just a few days to avert automatic tax increases and spending cuts. A number of Massachusetts Congressman suggest cutting nuclear programs instead.
Starbucks baristas are writing "come together" on all cups in the Washington, DC, area to encourage Congress and the President to come together to fix the fiscal cliff issue. For more information about this initiative, go to www.patch.com/fixthedebt. Congress and President Obama are racing against the clock this week as they make one last attempt to hammer out a deal to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” the U.S. government is set to go over on New Year’s Day. Without a compromise deal to lower the deficit, the government will face a self-imposed deadline that triggers both spending cuts and higher taxes. Congress itself set the Jan. 1 deadline after failing to come to a budget compromise earlier this year. On Jan. 1, the George W. Bush-…

The battle for the 6th District seat is over.
Congressman John Tierney has defeated Republican challenger Richard Tisei in an extremely tight race for Massachusetts 6th District congressional seat. This has been an unusually high-profile congressional race in Massachusetts, which is considered a stronghold for House Democrats. Tierney suffered from the impact of a family scandal involving his wife, her brother and her brother’s illegal offshore gambling business. Tisei, on the other hand, climbed to popularity with his aggressive campaign, his theme of bipartisanship and his years of serving in the state legislature. He out-raised Tierney in campaign donations every quarter. Tisei made Tierney’s family legal scandal a focus of the campaign, calling Tierney’s credibility into question…

There are many issues in the 6th District congressional race. Which one is the big factor for you?
The election is less than two weeks away. In the Massachusetts Sixth District, voters will decide who their next congressman will be. Incumbent Democrat John Tierney is in an intense race against Republican challenger Richard Tisei and Libertarian Daniel Fishman. The campaign has gained national attention. Legal drama involving Tierney's inlaws, Tierney campaign talk of Tisei having radical right-wing connections, and the emergence of Fishman's outside-the-box third party effort have made the race eventful, to say the least. All this, in the midst of a federal budget crisis, Medicare, student loans, abortion, high unemployment and more. We want to know what issue is the biggest deciding factor in your vote in the 6th District race. Discuss…

In what seems to be a hard political right hook to the gut, congressional candidate Richard Tisei is revisiting Congressman John Tierney's wife's legal scandal involving her fugitive brother's illegal gambling business. “For years, John Tierney’s wife worked for this massive criminal enterprise," Tisei said. "She made tens of thousands of dollars for it. She went to prison for her role. John Tierney should immediately give every single dime of that money to a charity. For them to keep the ‘gifts’ that actually constitute income is dishonest and corrupt.” Patrice Tierney pleaded guilty in 2010 to helping her brother Robert Eremian manage a Massachusetts bank account into which money from an illegal offshore gambling operation was funneling…

Here's a recap of Friday's Live Chat.
Congressman John Tierney joined us for a Live Chat Friday morning. Many of the questions had to do with his work in Congress over the years as well as what he wants to accomplish if reelected. Comment From Meredith: Congressman Tierney, we were promised that the stimulus package would keep unemployment under 8% yet the unemployment rate is higher than 8%. Would you support another stimulus package? John Tierney: The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act did in fact have much to do with this country avoiding a full blown depression. And saved or created nearly 4 million jobs at a time when doing so was essential. The administration upon taking office hoped that the unemployment rate would not rise above 8%, but obviously the severity of …

The Swampscott resident and state Senate and House minority leaders make up the team.
As the 6th congressional district campaign rages forward, Congressional candidate Richard Tisei is bringing big names on board. Team Tisei has announced a Leadership Team made up of former gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker of Swampscott, State Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr and State House Minority Leader Brad Jones. Tisei ran as Baker's running mate in 2010. The duo lost that election to Gov. Deval Patrick, but Baker did win the majority of votes in the 6th congressional district. “I chose Richard Tisei to be my running mate in 2010 because he had an outstanding reputation as an independent minded and effective legislator," Baker said. "That’s exactly the type of person we need in Washington to break the logjam and move this …

The general election season hasn't started yet, but in many races, attack ads have already been launched. And that includes the race for the Massachusetts 6th District congressional seat. Congressman John Tierney this week released an Internet ad calling out Republican challenger Richard Tisei (who, while not officially the GOP nominee, is running unopposed for the nomination) for opposing the Social Security payroll tax cut. The ad, complete with haunting, ominous music, starts with black text across the screen reading: "Massachusetts Families just filed their federal income taxes. If Richard Tisei had his way, they would have paid $1,290 more." Then (dark melody still playing) it cuts to an interview Tisei had on NECN in which he …

I used to live in Massachusetts, and I know how idiotic the voters there are--they keep voting in the same slimy, paid off criminals year after year. I hope you enjoy all the higher taxes, higher unemployment, higher energy costs, inflation and misery coming everyone's way now that you dumb democrats have reelected an inept, progressive, socialist liberal president hell bent on making "everyone …   more ›
