Indoor Track Celebrates 2012 Season

Swampscott track athletes celebrated their season with Chinese food, awards and socializing on Monday night in the school cafeteria.

  The boys and girls on the indoor track teams reflected on the end of another successful season in their high school track lives. The close-knit group held their banquet Monday in familiar surroundings — the school cafeteria. The gathering had the formality of any season-ending banquet with speeches, photographs and award presentations. But befitting a track gathering the teammates and their parents and coaches wound up the evening mixing, mingling and moving around the room. Both teams were very successful, said coaches Joe Tenney and Eric Robinson. "We have great kids," Coach Robinson said. "They know when to be serious and when to have fun." SCRAPBOOK: Track Teams Turn It On Against Salem

Both boys and girls Big Blue track teams turned in impressive performances in their meet against Salem Thursday. They ran hard to the very end of their races at the end of their season.

  Both boys and girls Big Blue track teams turned in impressive performances in their meets against Salem Thursday. They ran hard to the very end of races at the end of their season. Only post-regular-season meets remain including the State Meet in February at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. On Thursday at the Swampscott High field house the boys won their meet, 70-15; and the girls won theirs, 62-23. Both teams competed with grit.  Coach Joe Tenney was pleased to see the athletes push themselves and encourage teammates as the season wound down. A highlight was the mile run by Trevor Whelan. He ran his first ever sub-5-minute mile, reached a longstanding goal and was urged on by yelling teammates who waved him across …
