Kids Get Police Station Tour And More

Six Hadley Elementary School 8-year-olds visited the Swampscott Police Station Wednesday after their parents put in a winning bid for the tour and a cruiser ride at a school auction.

If kids still play cops and robbers these 8-year-olds have the inside track. Even if they don't play that game any more the Hadley students got a memorable look at the Swampscott Police Station and the officers' jobs. The students were triplets Jacob, Mia and Ava Taylor, Priya Cooper, Eli Jache and Madison Diehl. Their parents bid on and won the station tour and a cruiser ride at a Hadley auction for school enrichment programs. The children and three parents arrived to the station at 7:15 am Wednesday at shift change. It's a busy time. Officers are coming off the midnight shift and the day shift officers are arriving. Information gets exchanged, orders given. Officer Brendan Reen worked the night shift and gave the students a breakfast …

It's ironic that we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Hadley School, & in their Swampscott Reporter column, S. Greenfield, C. Marshall, & R. Spellios say they want to tear it down. Why can't this town rehab classic school buildings the way other towns are doing? Fenway Park is 100 & thanks to J. Henry was not torn down.   more ›

Kindergarteners Soak Up Spring

Students in Mrs. Shirley Sanchez and Mrs. Julie Lever's kindergarten classed explored signs of spring in the sun Thursday.

Courtesy of Sandra Rivers, principal of Hadley Elementary School. Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852) is credited with the origin of Kinder-Garten, a sunny experience that cultivates children like plants and lets them bloom like flowers. The kindergarten classes of Hadley teachers, Mrs. Shirley Sanchez and Mrs. Julie Lever experienced this day's sunny weather by being scientists and observing and recording some early signs of spring.

Hadley Exterior to be Inspected

Small pieces of concrete have fallen to the ground twice in the past 10 days. A structural engineer reported that the broken pieces are from the eaves area and do not affect the building's structural integrity, according to the superintendent of schools.

Small pieces of concrete have fallen to the ground twice in the past 10 days at Hadley Elementary School. Most recently, on Wednesday, broken pieces were discovered by the entrance,  the superintendent of schools said at Wednesday's School Committee meeting. A structural engineer reported that the broken pieces do not affect the building's structural integrity, Superintendent Lynne Celli said. Celli said the broken concrete came from decorative elements— ornamental as opposed to structural — at the top of the building by the eaves. The superintendent said she responded to the school after the concrete was first discovered and that an emergency exit plan was put in place as a precaution. She said the broken pieces do not pose a safety risk…

Whiz Kid

Let's Hear It For Hadley

Hadley Elementary School second-graders raised more than $1,000 to add some normalcy to the lives of homeless children.

This week's Whiz Kid award goes to second-graders at Hadley Elementary School. Mr. Citino's class forged stronger ties among themselves by strengthening the lives of young people in need — homeless children. While they were at it, the Hadley children generated school pride. They also received some well earned recognition from the school principal. The following is part of a letter from Hadley Principal Sandra Rivers to parents: We just wanted you to know how PROUD we are of Mr. Citino’s second grade class at Hadley School.  This class is a “looping” class.  As you are well aware, looping is an educational philosophy that encourages and fosters a sense of belonging to a classroom family. In an effort to support this philosophy we’ve had the…
