What's New With the Grown Ups 2's Sandler, Lautner, Rock, and Hayek Crew

With two months to go the movie stars have been promoting their film on television and in Cancun.

Movie stars who made Swampscott home last summer have been traveling the promotional circuit with only two months before Grown Ups 2's opening. That would be July 12. A new throwback, promo movie poster shows four of the film's stars from their high school yearbooks. Meanwhile, Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Taylor Lautner, Maya Rudolph and Chris Rock have made appearances in Las Vegas, Cancun, Mexico and, last month, the entire group, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In a recent edition of Totalfilm.com Lautner said he enjoyed the laughter and learned from the cast, and was intimidated. Sandler said Lautner brought his own intimidation, a following of  high-pitched screaming fans at each of his stops. Some of those …

Swampscott Goes to the Movies

Grown Ups 2 Releases Trailer: What Do You Think?

Let us know your take on the trailer in the comments sections.

We turned to one of the biggest Grown Ups 2 fans for her opinion of the movie's just released trailer. Julie Russell and friends from Swampscott were regulars at movie sets on the North Shore last summer, calling themselves the Fan Fam. They got friendly with cast members, joked with them, posed for goofy pics and ordered pizza while hanging out. Last fall, Julie, who was an extra, got an invited to a Boston screening of a test version of the movie.  She said it was funny, funnier than the first Grown Ups. Wherever the premiere is on July 12, she will be there. The Fan Fam couldn't make it through the winter without a GU2 gathering. They had a reunion in Swampscott. Here is what Julie thought of the new trailer:   What do you think?   Full…

Train Depot Being Appraised

This week the Mass Dept of Transportation is appraising the MBTA-owned Swampscott train depot.

The Mass Dept of Transportation is appraising the MBTA-owned Swampscott train depot this week. Town Administrator Tom Younger said last week that once the town learns the value the state has attached to the property then local officials will talk about what's next. Younger, Assistant Town Administrator Dave Castellerin and Town Planner Pete Kane will talk about the building's valuation and whether it is in the town's price range. "On whether it is a solid number or not," he said. Members of the Historical Commission and other Swampscott residents would like to see the historic property preserved and possibly developed. The Railroad Avenue station is on the MBTA Commuter Rail's Newburyport/Rockport Line. The station is more than 130 years…

VIDEO Curtain Call: Fan Family Says Bye To Grown Ups 2

They were among the most loyal of the set watchers during Sandler Nation over the summer in Swampscott. Here is a YouTube video we found from the last day on the set at Phillips Park.

The Adam Sandler movie Grown Ups 2 is due to open in theaters in nine months, July 2013. But just two months ago the loyal set watchers known as the "fan family" were saying bye to a favorite and one of the most accommodating Grown Ups 2 cast members, Alexander Ludwig. Here the Canadian complies with requests for a piggyback ride and other final requests. Here they are in a YouTube at the entrance to Bondelevitch Way at Phillips Park on the last day of Grown Ups 2. The fan family included Julie Russell, Leila Slakovic and other stargazing youth. They came from Swampscott and Tewksbury, Newburyport and Lynn and Revere — all over Eastern Massachusetts. Many of them didn't know each other before last summer but, thrown together, through …

Phillips Park Then and Now

The Grown Ups 2 soundstage came and went. Here is a look at it from beginning to end.

Cars are back at Phillips Park but only a little more than a month ago stacked shipping containers and a tent-top roof housed a major movie set in the park. Here is a look at the grounds and how they changed between May and September. TELL US: Would You Welcome Another Big Movie to Swampscott

Some people think the filming of Grown Ups 2 brought excitement to town and put it on the map; others say turning Swampscott to Stanton turned the town upside down. Would you welcome another big production here?

The filming of Grown Ups 2 brought Hollywood (Stanton) to this corner of the North Shore. Stars not only worked on sets in town but lived in local homes — paying some good rents, too, we've heard. Some people say the Adam Sandler production brought excitement to town and put it on the map. Others say it turned the town upside down — and it has yet to right itself. In any event, would you welcome another big production to Swampscott? Tell us in the comments section below.

Let's get real here - enough with being star struck. The Town did not receive enough money for the inconvenience and interruption to our lives. In the scheme of things, $300K was not a lot of money to lose access to our fields, beach parking, and on certain school days, losing our ability to get near the middle school to drop off kids for school. If the Town is going to do this again, at least …   more ›

A Plea to Shrub Rustlers: Bring Back Our Bushes, Please

The town's Beautification Committee has fewer shrubs and trees to plant since somebody made off with a truckload of their greenery last week.

The plan is still in place, it's just not as lush a plan. The plan is to plant trees and shrubs from the Grown Ups 2 movie set in Swampscott. To add beauty to the town, said Selectman David Van Dam. The plan got cut back a week ago Friday when bush rustlers descended on the donated plants being stored by the DPW garage at the Swampscott Cemetery. The bush thieves cherry picked. They lassoed only the healthiest and choicest of the arborvitae and assorted greenery. The Grown Ups 2 plants were lined nicely in an open area right behind the DPW building, and watered regularly. The thieves' haul was maybe a third of the 60 trees and shrubs.   The selectman thinks maybe, just maybe, the people who made off with the plants thought they were free…

Temporary Lights Coming to Upper Jackson Field

The lights will allow for soccer after dark and relieve the field-space crunch in the wake of the Grown Ups 2 construction at Phillips Park.

Temporary lighting will soon be installed at Upper Jackson Field to accommodate high school soccer practices and games throughout the fall. Columbia Pictures is paying for the temporary lights, the recreation director said. Use of Upper Jackson, located behind Swampscott High School, after sundown is needed because of reduced field space at Phillips Park due to Grown Ups 2 filming, said Swampscott Recreation Director Danielle Strauss. The movie used the practice football field and half of the neighboring all-purpose field for its sound stage, storage and stunt work. Neither the practice football field nor the half of the adjoining all-purpose field nor the Charlotte Road field in the far corner of Phillips Park will be ready for use this…

Why not use the big diamond field behind the Middle School? It has lights, parking and bathrooms. The soccer people may be able to open the Snack shack and sell some drinks to make money. They use the bowl for soccer during the fall so I don't think there is an issue using the big diamond. As far as I know, there is no one using it for baseball. At least the town would save money from the rental …   more ›
