The runners and golfers gathered victories on the road Wednesday.
Cross Country by Coach Jeffrey Bartlett The Swampscott High School cross-country teams headed to picturesque Bradley Palmer State Park on Wednesday to dual with Danvers and Winthrop in a tri-meet. Held in quintessential fall weather, the meet was a great opportunity for the Big Blue to preview the race course where the Northeast Conference Championships will be held in October. Both teams emerged with victories over both Danvers and Winthrop, with the boys leading things off. Senior captain Peter Hale and junior Matt Mahoney took the race out from the start, with senior captain Sam Crimmins and a pack of Danvers runners in pursuit. Picking up speed over the second half of the course, Hale soloed his way to victory, crossing the finish …

Anthony Springthorpe did something many golfers go their whole life without doing.
Two weeks ago 15-year-old Anthony Springthorpe swung his 6-iron from the tee on the 8th hole at Salem Municipal Golf Course. You can't see the pin from there. It's uphill from the tee, and he thought he hit it long. He searched for but could not find his ball on the Par 3, 144-yard hole. He should have been looking in the cup. That's where it went, said his coach. People have told him they play their entire life and never hit a hole in one. His father and grandfather are both golfers and neither of them have sunk one. People tell him it's unbelievable. They believe he did it, they just think it's unbelievable. "I can't believe it either," he said, shortly after sinking a long putt on the 17th hole at Tedesco Country Club on Wednesday. …

The Big Blue golfers go on the road for their first match of the season, swinging against Winthrop.
Coach Linda Portnoy and Assistant Coach Jim New's Swampscott High varsity golf team includes five returning players and five newcomers. Eight of those golfers, led by seniors Kevin Marescalchi and Trevor Massey, will travel for an away match today, Thursday, against the Winthrop Vikings. The key thought the coaches want the players to grasp today and each day thereafter is to play as a team. "The challenge is to remember our goal is to win matches not to come in four or five shots under par," said Coach Portnoy. It's always a challenge, given that golfers are young and that high school golf is both a team and individual sport. Still, it is best for a player to play it safe and win the individual match and get a win for the team as …

This article was submitted by Swampscott High's Assistant Coach Jim New. The annual Northeastern Conference Individual Championship was held Tuesday at the picturesque Kernwood Country Club which is situated along the Danvers River. This gem of a Donald Ross golf course was in pristine condition as 24 high school golfers from the conference (2 from each of the 12 schools) tried to master the slick greens and tight layout of this par 70 course under perfect weather conditions. Swampscott was represented by its two captains. Junior Trevor Massey was in contention and finally finished tied for fourth with a fine round of 80. Senior Gino Cresta was further back with a 91. Danvers Senior George Merry was this year's winner by one shot, …

This article is from Big Blue coach Francesco Recchia We lost to Danvers 2-1. It was a tale of two halves though. We came out completely flat against them in the first and they took advantage of it by scoring both of their goals in the first 15 minutes. We went into halftime down 2-0 and I made some changes to our formation based on what I saw from Danvers and we came out flying. We completely dominated the second half, but had problems finishing. Our goal came on a penalty shot from Kelly Birchmore with about 15 minutes left. Bridget Genoversa-Wong had 8 saves. Yes we lost, but it was good to see us fight right till the end. We never gave up and that actually carried over into our St. Mary's game on Saturday. We won 3-0 and it was our …

I coached Anthony in baseball and he was always a solid hitter. When he was 12, I saw him hit off the green and was floored at how far he hit his T shot. It doesn't surprise me that he got a hole in one! Congrats Anthony!   more ›
