The Big Blue passed and shot the ball with precision Friday in wet conditions at Upper Jackson.
The Big Blue girls soccer team ran, passed and scored in the rain. After their 5-0 win Friday against Lynn English some of them were singing in the rain. The wet and cool conditions on their home turf at Upper Jackson didn't deter the players' passing or enthusiasm. The win pushed the Blue's record to 4 wins 1 loss and 2 ties. Coach Francesco Recchia was most pleased with the team's consistent passing. By sharing and maintaining possession of the ball they created scoring opportunities, capitalizing on many of them. The girls knocked in four goals in the first half and one in the second. Leah Dawley, Erin Cassidy, Melinda Wilson, Mackenzie Robertson and Lauren Sullivan got the goals. Goalkeeper Samantha Rizzo made about 8 saves. The …

Coaches challenged the tournament-bound team to realize their potential.
The Big Blue spent 15 minutes in a circle with their coaches after Monday's loss to Danvers, 3-1, at Upper Jackson. The coaches told the team that how they end their season is up to them, Assistant Coach Andres Gutierrez said in an interview. "They've got so much potential, but you can't play the game on paper," he said of the 9-6-2 team. Much of Monday's game remained tied, 0-0, until a Danvers corner kick from the left in the second half. A Danvers player eventually took possession of the ball close to the goal and broke the tie pounding it into the net. Gutierrez said Blue needs toughness on defense to prevent scoring opportunities. Blue's possession style of play relies on team work — passing and running without the ball — but they …

The Big Blue squad upped their season record to 7-2-2 with an 8-1 win over Revere Monday.
The Big Blue girls discovered a killer intinct on Columbus Day, putting away Revere 8-1. Seven different players scored goals, Coach Francesco Recchia said. Kelly Birchmore, who netted two goals, knocked in the first and Chloe Dorgan drilled the eighth. In between the passing-and-possession team stayed on the attack. "They played hard the whole game," the coach said. They also learned to flip "the kill switch," Recchia said. They took advantage of opportunities to put a team away, he said. Other scorers were Nikki Rose, Shauna King, Emily Cerra, Marina Padovani and Tess Gorman. Samantha Rizzo was in goal. The Big Blue will need to be a well-oiled machine Wednesday when they square up on their home field against the undefeated Tanners of …

The tie puts the Big Blue at 6-2-2 at the halfway point of their season.
Assistant Coach Andres Gutierrez liked what he saw in the Big Blue's effort against Marblehead at Upper Jackson Friday. "They ran hard to everything," he said. "They were loud and ready to play." The scoreboard read 0-0 at the end of the game. But both teams had scoring opportunities. With 15 minutes to play Swampscott goalie Samantha Rizzo turned away a threat. Players from both teams were clustered around the goal and the ball ended up free about five yards from the goal. The goalie sprang from her goal line and kicked the ball clear. Marblehead also rang a free kick off the post. The Blue offense had opportunities, as well. Still, the main thing that Gutierrez and Coach Francesco Recchia saw and liked was their team's hustle. That …

The Blue girls played tough defense in a 0-0 tie against Peabody on Tuesday.
Big Blue girls' soccer has still never beat Peabody in coach Francesco Recchia's tenure. But the 0-0 tie on the Tanners' turf had some bright spots. For one, it was the first time a Recchia team has tied the Tanners, traditionally a powerful soccer club. Also on the plus side, the Blue girls played solid D. Goalie Bridget Genoversa-Wong registered 11 saves, and her fullbacks played well in front her, the coach said. "The team defense was perfect," he said. At the other end, Blue shooters had their chances. About six of their 14 shots on goal were scoring opportunities, he said. The Blue team's record stands at 2-0-1. They play the Beverly Panthers on Friday at Upper Jackson Field at Swampscott High School. The teams split their meetings …

Shauna King nets two of Swampscott's first three goals.
Big Blue girls soccer controlled the field for much of the game Friday on their home field, defeating the Malden Tornados 6-0. The win sent Francesco Recchia's crew to their third victory and a 3-0 start to the season. Shauna King netted two goals, and Kelly Birchmore, Nikki Rose, Emily Cerra and Alison Grimes each scored one. Before the game, Coach Recchia told his charges to not look past Malden. "I told them to take the game seriously," he said. After the game, he told his players they played well but need to coninute to work on communicating with each other on the field. He also said they need to finish off plays by taking quality shots when opportunities arise. For Malden, coach Lindsey O'Leary saw a turning point Friday in her team's…
