SHS Girls Basketball Car Wash Saturday Sept. 1

The girls will be developing their teamwork early — a fast break of sorts — when they wash cars Saturday at the DPW garage on Paradise Road from 9 am to 1 pm.

This article was submitted by supporters of Swampscott High basketball. The first student-run car wash of the school year is here, and none too soon for those of you who have been procrastinating getting your car washed. The SHS Girls Basketball team — arguably the hardest working team in town — is washing cars on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 9-1 at the DPW garage, 200 Paradise Road. The rain date is Sunday. The team asks for a $5 donation. Proceeds will be used to help pay for buses to away scrimmages (the school only pays for buses to regularly scheduled games) and participation in a fall league with most of the other NEC teams.  Most of the girls are not playing a fall sport, but rather spending the fall getting ready for the winter …

Big Blue Girls Declaw Panthers 54-21

The girls ran out to a 16-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, bumping up their record to 6-1.

The Swampscott girls basketball team returned home Friday after four away games and routed Beverly, 54-21. Niki Laskaris was Blue's top scorer with 16 points, including two three-pointers. She hit the glass, too, snaring seven rebounds. Ara Talkov poured in 15 and was perfect from the stripe, going 5 for 5. The whole team shot well from the foul line, sinking 12 of 16, said coach Jack Hughes. The coach said point guard Marina Padovani was a floor general against the Beverly Tigers. She dished out seven assists, grabbed five rebounds and stole the ball twice. “She just runs things for us,” he said. Carolyn Murphy pounded the boards — grabbing seven rebounds — and chipped in eight points. Merry Ball played a tough all-around game. She had …

PHOTOS: Girls Basketball Clamps Down on Marblehead

The Big Blue girls basketball team moved to 5-1 on the season with a convincing 48-26 win over rival Marblehead Tuesday.

The Big Blue girls basketball team moved to 5-1 on the season with a convincing 48-26 win over rival Marblehead Tuesday. Coach Jack Hughes said his team's defense was key to their win on the Marblehead court. "Offensively we weren't with it," he said. "We've had droughts before and we don't let it affect us defensively." The Big Blue played with intensity throughout the game. They swarmed on defense, crashed the boards and hit the floor for loose balls. Niki Laskaris and Alexa Goldman played with fiery intensity at both ends of the court. Ara Talkov blocked shots and converted plays on offense driving to the hoop. The offense started clicking in the second half. At one point Jesse DePaolo took deep shot and yelled in disgust knowing the …
