Question: What is the Hawthorne Brook Neighborhood Association?

We received several questions in the wake of the Hawthorne Brook Neighborhood Association's appearance before selectmen last week.

Welcome to You Ask, Patch Answers, a column in which you ask us a question about anything going on in town and we do our best to find an answer. Got a question you'd like to see Patch answer? E-mail it to: terry.date@patch.com What is the Hawthorne Brook Neighborhood Association and where is the brook located?   The neighborhood group formed in the wake of disastrous flooding in Swampscott on Oct. 4, said member Roseann Mark. The group has 20 very active members and about 30 members total. The neighborhood includes homes and condos south of Tedesco Country Club, within an area encompassed by Salem Street, Humphrey Street and Crossman Avenue. Within that area are numerous streets, among them, Linden Avenue, Stanley Road and Dennison …

Question: What's Going on With the Pumping Station?

The pumping station repairs are still about 4-6 weeks away from completion.

Welcome to You Ask, Patch Answers, a column in which you ask us a question about anything going on in town and we do our best to find an answer. Got a question you'd like to see Patch answer? E-mail it to: terry.date@patch.com A reader asked us for the latest information about the town pumping station, including the round-the-clock monitoring of the temporary by-pass system there and who will pay for the monitoring. In September, a system failure resulted in flooding at the Humphrey Street station — 18 feet of wastewater filled the basement and half the floor above it. The town installed an emergency sewer by-pass outside the station to pump its wastewater to the Lynn Treatment plant and prevent raw sewage from backing into homes, …

Easy Sandie---the problems probably date back YEARS AGO---before Mr. Cresta was on board--weren't we funding some lame disability for DPW director??? Also, Swampscott opted not to tie into the at-the-time brand new lynn sewerage treatment plant which probably would have solved alot of sscott's old water pipe and service problems-----lack of expert advice and the band-aid approach are to blame…   more ›

UPDATED: A Step Forward

Governor Patrick has requested a Small Business Administration disaster declaration for Essex County.

Governor Patrick has requested a Small Business Administration disaster declaration for Essex County. If the declaration is approved then homeowners and business owners may qualify for low-interest loans, according to Gov. Deval Patrick's Office. Peter Judge of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency expects the SBA will announce its decision next week. If a disaster is declared, the SBA will put in place an outreach program. Agency representatives will announce a time and place, through the media, for applicants to ask questions about disaster-assistance loans. Homeowners can borrow up to $200,000 for flood losses. A loan is not the ideal situation, especially for someone who was facing economic hardship before the flood, said Town …

Trash-to-Treasure Recycling Rises with Flooding

People are tossing flood-soaked items; and others are claiming them.

Renee LaLone and her mom cruised the neighborhood slowly Tuesday morning, casting eyes side-to-side. There.  They spied a white rocking chair and plucked it. It was in a curbside pile fronting a home off Paradise Road. Renee wedged the rocker into the back of her car, and the two shoved off for the next stop — yet to be discovered. Welcome to the Swampscott world of trash-to-treasure recycling. Chairs and desks, and couches and cabinets that once sat inside homes now stand outside them in the wake of last week’s flash flooding in town. There’s plenty of competition for the stuff.  The mother-daughter-duo didn’t know it but they beat the competition to the rocking chair. A woman in a new looking mini-van who had just salvaged furniture from…

I was just thinking the same thing about trash picking. And, in fact, I put my soda cans in a box on top of my recycling bin in the hope that someone who needs the money (or is industrious enough to collect cans to earn some) will take them.   more ›

Emergency Metal Recycling in Wake of Flood

The recycling will take place from 8 am until noon in the rear parking lot at Phillips Park on Saturday, Oct. 15, and Saturday, Oct. 29.

The Jackson Park Playground Committee will be holding an emergency metal recycling event for residents impacted by the recent flooding.  The J.P. Committee, along with DPW Director Gino Cresta, Town Administrator Andrew Maylor, and Scrap-it, inc. of Everett have made special arrangements for an emergency drop off at Phillips Park rear parking lot, on Humphrey Street for residents to bring any damaged or unwanted metal on Saturday, Oct. 15, and/or Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8-noon.  Phillips Park is home to Blocksidge Field, where Swampscott High School plays football. As always residents of Swampscott, Marblehead, Nahant, Salem and Lynn are all invited to drop off metal on either of the two dates.  These collections are the last of the year …

Time to Tally the Damage

Emergency Management representatives collected flood-damage reports from about 350 Swampscott people between Wednesday and Friday.

An hour before Friday’s noon deadline about 350 Swampscott people had filed flood-damage reports at Town Hall with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. Friday was the third day the agency was at Town Hall to collect the reports and answer questions. The money question is a big one. What will it take to trigger the release of federal disaster dollars? It takes 500 uninhabitable homes in a county to release federal grants for residents, said Peter Judge, a spokesman for MEMA. The federal relief is intended to help residents whose living areas were left uninhabitable as a result of the disaster, he said. Basements are not considered living areas, he said. Still, there were some homes in Swampscott where living areas were damaged.  …

Hadley Was Dry and Ready For Classes Wednesday

The superintendent answered concerns about mold and conditions at Hadley School following Tuesday's flash flood.

Flooding in Hadley School's boiler room and a portion of its cafeteria did not spur mold production, the superintendent said on Wednesday. Parents of Hadley School children worried about the 100-year-old school's condition after classes were cancelled Tuesday due to the early-morning flash flood, said School Committee member Rick Kraft. School reopened on Wednesday. Superintendent Lynne Celli said the boiler room was pumped out Tuesday and the cafeteria was dried with a wet vacuum, floor fans and other means. The district's plumbing inspector supervised the operation and certified that school was ready to reopen, Celli said. The inspector, Peter McCarriston, said water was not standing long enough for mold to build up, she said. The …

VIDEO: A Bates Road Experience

Here is the Oct. 4 flood experience from one part of town, one street, one couple.

Here is the Oct. 4 flood experience from one part of town, one street, one couple. Dmitry and Yelena Yumansky heard a bang early Tuesday morning. The noise came from their basement. A sheet of water knocked in the bulkhead door and rushed into their finished basement. Yelena went downstairs into ankle-deep water. In a few minute the water was up to her thighs. Later, with help from neighbors, they pumped out their basement. They threw away a Dumpster full of furniture, electronics and appliances. They threw away clothes and ruined keepsakes including old record albums of Russian composers that their parents had given them. Yelena spoke with a Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency representative at Town Hall on Wednesday. The …
