VIDEO: Sideline Spirit Soared at the Big Blue Flag Game

The Swampscott senior girls and their fans were highly charged throughout Friday's game at Piper Field, creating an electric atmosphere on the sidelines and in the stands.

The Swampscott flag football team came up short on the scoreboard but not on energy. Their spirit and that of their fans soared throughout the game. It was something to see and hear.

Red Tops Blue in Flag Football Footrace

Marblehead jumped to a 21-6 lead in the first quarter on three long runs and held off a persistent Big Blue attack.

Marblehead outran Swampscott in the 2012 Flag Football Bowl at Piper Field Friday, 44-32. Both teams peeled off great sweeping touchdown runs from the outset. The runs served to only further electrify the fans and sidelines. The red team’s Tyler Phillips sprinted into the end zone four times. The blue and white team’s Katherine Pitman and Erin Cassidy slung into the open field and raced for two touchdowns apiece. Some of these runs were for more than 50 yards. The sidelines and stands on both sides were hopping and shaking from beginning to end. Players on both sides turned to face their fans and threw their hands over head imploring them to turn up the energy even higher. As if that was possible. But it was. And they did. High-pitched …

Kudos to the coaches and staff who worked so hard with our SHS seniors. It was a remarkable experience in good sportsmanship, discipline and perseverance. The lessons learned will be with these girls forever. The most important lesson was to follow the rules and play fairly. In that regard, Swampscott was a winner and we should all be proud.   more ›

Big Blue Girls Flying High For Flag Football

The big game is tonight at 7 at Piper Field at Marblehead High School.

The Big Blue Babes flag football team didn't want their double-session practices to end. "They were disappointed they had to go home and rest," coach Joe Bennett said as practice wound down in the Swampscott High gym Wednesday night. The rest he spoke of was for tonight's showdown at 7 on Piper Field in Marblehead when the Swampscott and Marblehead teams clash in their annual flag football game. It's the Super Bowl of girls sporting events in these parts. Senior Vy Li, a speedy cornerback on the Swampscott squad, remembers when she was a freshman and witnessed the senior girls screaming in the school hallways about their upcoming powderpuff, flag football game. Vy didn't understand the excitement then. Now she does. She and her teammates…

You Tell Us: Is The Flag Football Game Tackle Without Pads?

The players dialed up the intensity on the turf at Friday's flag football game. On some plays, for both teams' defensive units, the stop was as much a tackle as it was a flag swipe. What do you think?

Thousands of screaming fans.  A chance to represent their schools and classes. Sky-high emotion on the sideline. The Swampscott and Marblehead players dialed up the intensity on the turf at Friday's flag football game under the lights at Piper Field in Marblehead. On some plays, for both teams' defensive units, the stop was as much a tackle as it was a flag swipe.  What do you think?

UPDATED: (Not) The First Flag Football Game

The Marblehead/Swampscott girls' tradition started long before 1970. Add to our collection by posting a picture or a comment or sending either to terry.date@patch.com

Roll back to when cars with big engines roared over streets and high school varsity sports were commonly known as schoolboy athletics and you'll be back to a time when Marblehead and Swampscott girls played flag football. That would be 1970. And, we have learned from a reader, that the games go further back in time. Much further. In the original story on this annual game we said they played their first game in 1970 but a reader sent us a photo of a powderpuff game from 1958. That was certainly a time when far fewer girls and women competed on athletic courts and fields. Since then female athletics have emerged, offering girls and young women a host of sports in which to sharpen their athletic skills, learn to win and lose and be part of …

SCRAPBOOK: Blue Spirit Soars in 28-14 Victory

Here are photos from off the flag football playing field. We'll have game photos and a game story tomorrow from the annual Swampscott/Marblehead senior girls battle.

The Swampscott junior class girls were jumping and screaming outside the Blocksidge field house long before Saturday afternoon's flag football kick-off. They were jumping and screaming and dancing to DJ Kaz's Party Rock Anthem. They were awaiting game time against Marblehead. The arc of their enthusiasm grew for 20 minutes before cresting as the Swampscott Big Blue seniors streamed from the field house, down the stairs and on to the field. Two juniors who were part of the spirit squad explained their enthusiasm like this: "It's because Marblehead is our all-time rival," said Jenna Resnick. "It's a one-time thing and we are looking forward to our turn as seniors," said Paulina Ferullo. "We came out to support our girls." That still didn't …

Swampscott Stories

Call It Flag Football Thank You Very Much

Swampscott High senior girls will square up against their counterparts from Marblehead on Saturday in the annual flag football battle.

They do not see their game as a powder puff. Neither will spectators when the Swampscott Big Blue girls flag football squad takes the field against the Marblehead senior girls at 1 pm Saturday at Blocksidge Field. At practice on Friday, the thumping and pounding sound was shoulders on shoulders and running shoes on turf. Caroline Murphy leveled a block on the line. Kelsie Mayo tore around end and scorched the sideline for a running score. Jessie DePaolo dropped back in the pocket and threw a tight spiral. Nearby several senior boys coaching the team said they and the girls take the flag football game very seriously. They want to win. Yes, the game is a charity fundraiser; and no, the girls aren't wearing pads and playing tackle. But it's a…
