Fifteen departments will bring at least two of their finest dishes to the table at the benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Upstairs in the fire station, two days before the Cooking for a Cure MDA extravaganza, veteran Marblehead firefighter Tim Doane ribs a relative newbie about his culinary skills. There's a reason he washes dishes after fire house dinners, Tim tells Jeff Martin, whose cooking repertoire gets about as sophisticated as hot dogs and beans. That dish is low on the ladder in a department whose cooks turn out tasty and interesting delights such as Captain Porter's homemade shrimp scampi pizza; Tom Rice's roasted Brussels sprouts with a reduced balsamic sauce; and Tim's pulled chicken enchiladas. Just Friday Tim's group had spicy tomato mussels and shrimp over linguine for dinner. These are the kinds of specialties diners will feast on Saturday …

The fire likely started as a result of a burning cigarette, fire officials said.
Swampscott fire Capt. Kevin Thompson arrived to 2 Superior Street about 12:15 p.m. Wednesday and saw three-foot flames rising from a mattress in the rear bedroom. The flames may have been sparked by a cigarette, he said. Swampscott firefighters toting fire hose entered the front door of the two-and-a-half story house and extinguishing the fire, the captain said. "A good knock-down," he said. They contained the fire to the bedroom, getting there just in time to stem the spread of flames in the circa 1895 home. "Another minute or so and we'd still be fighting the fire," he said, right before the crews headed back to the fire station. The occupant of the first floor was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation. She was…

Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire on Superior Street. It appeared to have started because of a cigarette.
A Superior Street resident was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation in the wake of a Wednesday fire. Firefighters responded about 12:15 p.m. to 2 Superior St., near the Lynn line, to find a fire in the rear bedroom of a two-and-a-half story house. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to that room. Fire companies from Swampscott, Lynn and Marblehead assisted during the incident. The home is in a residential neighborhood of two- and three-story homes within sight of the railroad station. The damaged home is a light-colored New Englander with a porch. Firefighters fought through freezing temperatures to extinguish a fire in a building on Pleasant Street Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out at Bang Tin Art Gallery, 124 Pleasant St., Thursday afternoon. The fire was reported around 4 p.m. and is believed to have originated somewhere in the basement, Fire Chief Jason Gilliland said. Fire Capt. Michael Porter said local fire crews did great work battling what proved to be a difficult fire in spite of extremely harsh weather conditions. Swampscott sent an engine to the single-alarm fire and provided station back-up with their ladder truck at the Swampscott Fire Station, said Swampscott fire Capt. Remo Zimbaldi. A crew of Swampscott firefighters worked above the first floor cutting into walls and chasing down fire through voids in the circa 1900 building's walls. Marblehead fire did …

They will be living about a quarter mile from their Andrew Road home that was destroyed by fire on Jan. 3.
The Ghirardini family will be living in the Monument Avenue area of Swampscott, about a quarter mile from 50 Andrew Road, their former home destroyed on Jan. 3 by fire. They found the right home at the right price with the right number of bathrooms, said real estate agent Amanda Brawley. "Perfect," she said. They were looking for a four-bedroom home with at least two bathrooms that rented for $3,000 to $3,500. They expect to be renting for a year. The agent, who works for Jack Conway Real Estate, said a benefit of the nearby location is that the Ghirardinis' four children will be living close to their friends. They found the location on Sunday and plan to move in three weeks. They are now staying in a temporary furnished rental. Brawley …

A pick-up truck burned on Humphrey Street in the early morning hours today after an accident near the Marblehead town line. The lone occupant had gotten out of the Dodge Dakota pick-up truck upon firefighters' arrival, about 1:45 am, according to fire and police reports. The individual was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries, police said. Police dispatched firefighters to the scene at the intersection with Crosman Ave. at 1:42 am., said Swampscott fire Capt. John Quinn. The Fire Department's ladder truck was first on the scene since its engine was out on another call, the fire captain said. An elderly man involved in a single-car accident on Essex Street Tuesday afternoon received injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, said Swampscott fire Lt. Sheila Scranton. The man's vehicle was on its roof near Essex Terrace and Burrill Street when firefighters arrived to the scene shortly before 4 pm. Passersby had already helped the man from the vehicle and he was conscious and alert, the lieutenant said. The man was concerned for the well being of his dog, likely a terrier mix, that was in the vehicle, she said. The dog was shaking but otherwise appeared to be OK when firefighters left the pet in the care of an animal control officer, the lieutenant said. The driver was transported to Salem Hospital.
