A family tacked a big yellow ribbon to the big maple outside their home Sunday morning, the gesture inspired by a soldier's comments heard on television.
From the road and in the distance the sight looked like a big tree getting a group hug. As traffic edged forward on Humphrey Street the sight across from Newman's Bakery heaved into focus. The group appeared to be a family — mom, dad and two kids. The daughter stood on a step ladder and held a wrapped yellow ribbon around the broad maple trunk while her father stood on tippy toes and stapled it. Mom Sharon Morris stood back and eyed it for levelness before she took up a hammer and fastened the bow. Sharon, Ben, and their children, Felicia, 12, and Kegan, 10, have been living in town since July, renting the home that looks out on the tree. They were hanging the ribbon and bow Sunday morning to remember soldiers. Sharon got the idea after…

Give back to local teachers by celebrating World Teachers' Day on Oct. 5.
World Teachers' Day, celebrated on Oct. 5, is a great opportunity to show teachers in the Swampscott School District how great you think they are. But, the day also takes on a deeper meaning, standing for the protection of teachers' rights. Since its inception in 1994, World Teachers' Day has had a theme every year. The theme for 2012 is “Take a stand for teachers.” This day was founded by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Its aim is to educate the public about the conditions of being a teacher around the world, focusing specifically on the protection of teachers' rights, and the proper training, development and status raising of teachers. UNESCO’s partners in this effort are the International …

The line-up of restaurants serving samples of their specialties has grown to 27 this year.
The Swampscott High juniors are sitting in the school cafeteria where on Oct. 14 from 1-3:30 p.m. a few hundred people are expected to sample everything from pizza and soups to high-end cuisine. Twenty-seven or more restaurants will serve their specialties at the second annual A Taste of Swampscott, an event that benefits the Class of 2014. They are an ambitious group, this Class of 2014, and include a good many leaders and organizers. They crowd around a cafeteria table on this school day, filling all the seats shortly after lunch. They talk about their latest event and work on behalf of their classmates. A few things are clear. They plan well, work together and like new ideas. They have hosted minor fundraisers such as car washes and …

Your neighbor who volunteers at the library, your child’s bus driver, and the Little League coach in your community may not seem to have much in common at first glance. But Patch’s new initiative, Count Us In, aspires to bring together all Good Samaritans by highlighting residents who are exemplary at making your community a more positive place. Partnering with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC), Count Us In aims to illustrate HPHC's values. They believe that “amazing things happen when people work together” and that is why we want to share stories about just that. If you know someone who exemplifies being a good neighbor, volunteer or teacher—or someone who has simply helped the community in an inspiring way—please tell us about it in the…

A Swampscott mom, the new president of the Salem Swampscott Youth Hockey League, and other moms want to grow the league through player development.
These hockey moms are less on the sidelines than the front lines. In the male dominated world of hockey these moms have major roles, filling five leadership positions in the Salem/Swampscott Youth Hockey League. They are league President Carmen Henriques of Swampscott, Clerk Lisa Lavoie of Salem, Treasurer Linda Gagnon of Salem, operations head Bridget McGuiness of Lynn and fundraiser Patty Remon of Salem. The female presence comes with new ideas, determination and anxiety. Carmen became league president in June and, several weeks ago, was nervous about an upcoming meeting — the first district meeting, a gathering for representatives from area youth hockey leagues. She figured to be in the clear minority as a woman. "I do not know what …

I cleaned out my 2-car garage last weekend. This once or twice yearly activity was made more onerous by virtue of having my 3 children leave home for marriage or graduate school, abandoning items they no longer wanted. In previous times, I would have easily had 3 or 4 barrels of stuff to throw away. But I challenged myself to recycle everything I could. In the end, a half-filled 15-gallon kitchen trash bag went into the barrel to be disposed of. Many items were easy to recycle: the cardboard and paper, plastic bottles and the like. I filled a large box with metal items to bring to the monthly metal drop off at the DPW, supporting the Jackson Park playground effort. Metal, hard plastic, and paper (shredding is done at no charge …

Amy Lockerbie Smith of Swampscott tells us about the Habitat P.L.U.S. Veterans Home, 516 — 520 Essex St., in Lynn, and the work that she and other volunteers did on Sept. 14 and 15. The Habitat project is led by Swampscott's Patrick Burke.
Recently, quite by accident, I stumbled on an Internet request from Patrick Burke and Dave Reese asking for volunteers to help with some repair work of veterans' property in Lynn. Carpentry tools aren’t my forte, but I could manage a broom and paint brush so I signed up for Friday. The day dawned bright and sunny, which was a good start; however, this work would have taken place rain or shine. When I arrived at 8:00 o’clock, men were already busy sawing and hammering away rebuilding the deck and stairway on one of the buildings. Soon I had the pleasure of meeting Patrick Burke, who heads the GE Veterans Council and has been helping the Habitat Plus Inc. Veterans Program for about four years, ever since he found the home while jogging …
