Proceeds from the 9/11 Travis Manion Foundation Heroes Run in Swampscott were awarded to the Swampscott Police and Fire Departments. Each of the public safety departments received a check for $1,650. The departments, in turn, donated a portion of each check to the Jennifer Harris and Jared Raymond Memorial Scholarship Fund. One hundred and fifty runners joined the 5K run at Fisherman's Beach on Sept. 9. Event organizer Jim Kausek of Swampscott, an Army veteran, said at the time that Travis Manion Foundation Heroes Runs were being held throughout the country and six other countries. The organizers' goal is to never forget the sacrifices of the Heroes of September 11, 2001 — the veteran, first responder, military, and civilian.

"There's nothing that I can compare to what I saw down there," said one of the 25 troopers that helped out after Sandy devastated nearby states.
Before Hurricane Sandy's full scope of devastation in New York and New Jersey was even known, 25 men and women from the Massachusetts State Police were on their way to assist those who had been displaced from their homes. "When I reached out to ask if the state police would be willing to field a group of 25 people, I already knew the answer," Undersecretary for Homeland Security and Director of the state's Emergency Management Agency, Kurt Schwartz said in a press conference in Framingham Monday afternoon. "The answer was a resounding yes." One of the troopers was Brian Dunn, who works out of the South Boston barracks. "There's nothing that I can compare to what I saw down there," said the 28-year veteran of the force. "We were there when …

The Red Cross blood drive was hosted at Swampscott High School, part of its student organized Community Wellness Day.
The Swampscott High School blood drive had an hour to go and the organizers were closing in on their goal — 40 donations. Room B208, sometimes a classroom, sometimes a School Committee meeting room, was a Red Cross blood room from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. Swampscott High junior Jessica Vogel checked in the donors at a table just outside the room's door. She said the 35 donors up to that point were all students, teachers or people from the community — each group accounting for about a third of the donors. Inside the room, reclining on comfy padded recliners, were Swampscott High seniors Michelle Harling and Jake Powell. They were giving blood. Jake squeezed a red rubber ball. Michelle looked relaxed. Charlotte Upham, a Swampscott …

A Beverly woman found a diaper bag at Marshalls. It turned out to contain $11,000 cash. Then the person did something shocking — turned it in to police.

The blue paisley bag hanging from a Marshalls rack grabbed the shopper's attention. When she unzipped it what really opened her eyes were the contents — and not just the diapers and baby wipes. Cheryl Gavazzi of Beverly found cash, $11,000, according to Swampscott police and WBZ's news radio 1030's website. Gavazzi brought the money and the bag to Beverly Police, not knowing the Swampscott station's location. Swampcott police had already received a report about the lost bag. A man told them his wife was missing the bag she brought into Marshalls. Police returned the money to the couple. The money was raised to build a church in Guatemala. [Editor's note: The original post had this as a paper bag being returned to Swampscott Police. That …

See what other things Sammi does on the soccer field.

They practice with the local Special Olympics soccer entry, the North Shore Rovers, on Sunday mornings behind the Swampscott Middle School. Sammi is a sophomore at Swampscott High. "It's worth waking up early, seeing them have so much fun," she said on a recent Sunday morning at the field. 2) Swampscott Scholars: 2012 Swampscott High graduate Marina Padovani received …
