Cohen Hillel Academy Educator Becomes U.S. Citizen on 9/11

Rivka Pe’eri of Swampscott and her husband Yigal became U.S. citizens.

  This article was submitted by Cohen Hillel Academy Rivka Pe’eri of Swampscott and her husband Yigal were among 2,500 Massachusetts immigrants, and the only two Israelis, who became U.S. citizens on September 11 during a moving naturalization ceremony in Boston.   Rivka was born in Haifa and holds a degree in economics and sociology from Tel Aviv University. She and her husband moved to Pittsburgh in 1995 and to the North Shore of Boston in 2000, where she began working at Cohen Hillel Academy as a Hebrew and Jewish Studies teacher.  She feels particularly blessed to be a U.S. citizen and feels “it is the land of opportunity.”  She loves the North Shore, “both for the weather and the people. “ Rivka, who is proud of her citizenship and …

Gallery: Arthur J. Epstein Feted at Cohen Hillel Academy Gala

The gala featured Billy Elliot at Boston’s Opera House.

  On Sunday, Aug. 19, Cohen Hillel Academy honored Arthur J. Epstein of Marblehead at a record-breaking, sold-out Gala that featured a performance of the Tony Award-winning musical Billy Elliot. A pre-show supper reception in Mr. Epstein’s honor was held at the Hyatt Regency. Hillel’s Gala 2012 was attended by close to 600 supporters.  Arthur J. Epstein, a life-long resident of the North Shore and one of the most respected and supportive community leaders, currently serves as Board Chair of the Cohen Hillel Academy trustees. In addition, he has contributed his time, expertise, leadership, and resources to many other institutions.   This article was submitted by Diane Knopf The Cohen Hillel Academy graduating class of 2012 completed their Hillel experience in a heartfelt ceremony at Temple Ner Tamid in Peabody on June 19, with almost 300 parents, relatives, friends, faculty and staff in attendance. Ken Schulman, who is retiring as head of school this year, addressed the graduates with real affection with the following: “You brought us joy from the moment we met you. We loved teaching you, taking care of your needs, coaching you, playing with you and discussing meaningful, and sometimes not so meaningful, issues. Hillel Academy Students Lend Life To History

Four Swampscott students portrayed historical figures.

Historical figures from America’s past came to life recently at Cohen Hillel Academy’s Living History Museum.  From poet Emily Dickinson to 9/11 hero Todd Beamer, the costumed characters wowed an audience of fellow students, community guests and parents. The school’s eighth-graders wrote and delivered monologues and created costumes and sets to depict the era and life of historical characters for an integrated language arts, social studies and art project. The Living History Museum combined the concepts of tableaux vivants (scenes presented on stage by costumed actors who remain silent and motionless as if in a picture) and dramatic monologues (literary compositions in which a speaker reveals …
