Snowbound sidewalks force walkers into the road, many of them children on their way to and from school.
Hadley parents hope for help getting their kids safely to school when ice and snow stand in the way. And no doubt parents with children at other elementary schools share a similar hope. Melissa Defilippi, mom to a Hadley kindergartener, hopes help arrives in the form of a Town Meeting by-law requiring residents to clear sidewalks in front of their homes. Cleared sidewalks would give children a place to walk other than the side of the road. She is hopeful selectmen will propose the Town Meeting by-law. The head of the Department of Public Works, Gino Cresta, said sidewalk shoveling proposals have come before several Town Meetings in his 15 years as a meeting member. Snow needs to be cleared from school parking lots and snowbanks lowered for children walking to school.
Swampscott Public Schools are closed tomorrow, Feb. 11, for all students and staff, said High School Principal Layne Millington. School plowing contractors have work to do at the high school and middle school, said DPW Director Gino Cresta. And DPW needs to remove snow from sidewalks and snowbanks to make walking routes safer. School maintenance and school contractors are responsible for plowing the high school and middle school. DPW is responsible for plowing Hadley, Clarke and Stanley Elementary Schools, the DPW director said.

The fire department has received some reports of water in basements.
11:20 a.m. The tide and coastal flooding is slowly receding, reports Swampscott Fire Chief Kevin Breen. It looks like the worst of the flooding has passed. A few homes on Puritan Road in the Whales/Eisman's Beach area received basement flooding, he said. There was also damage to home porches and exteriors. 11:16 a.m. — Water is receding. Roads remain closed at four locations. Eisman's, King's Preston and Fsiherman's Beaches but should reopen in an hour. 9:20 a.m. of 9:20 Saturday morning, seawater had spilled into streets at Whales, Preston and King's beaches, said Fire Chief Kevin Breen.
