Two Junior Wrestlers Earn Gionet Medals

Five Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers competed in the weekend tournament in Pelham, NH

  Two of five Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers earned medals at the 2012 Daniel Gionet Memorial Wrestling Tournament held at Pelham, N.H. Marblehead junior Sean Taylor took second place in the heavyweight division and Swampscott junior Jake Powell took second place in the 113-pound division. Taylor lost 2-1 in his championship match to Zach Migneault of Hollis-Brookline, N.H. Migneault, who is ranked No.1 in Division 2 New Hampshire, has become a bit of a nemesis for Taylor. Taylor lost to him 1-0 in three over times earlier this season at the Tyngsboro Tournament and 2-1 in a match last year.  Taylor is presently ranked as the No. 2 heavyweight among Division 3 wrestlers in Mass. Wrestlers in First Home Meet Tonight

The combination Swampscott/Marblehead team will tangle with Danvers/Ham-Wen tonight at 6 pm at Swampscott High School.

  The Black and Blue wrestling team will hit the mat for their first home meet of the season tonight at 6 pm at Swampscott High School. Wrestling supporters will raffle coupons to establishments including Yans Bistro and Hot Cheese Pizza at the home opener. Coach Mike Stamison and his staff have been hammering away at the basics, arm bar defense and better body positioning as they prepare the grapplers for the rigorous wrestling season. "We are well conditioned, but also have to be fundamentally sound, and that's what we are going to work on before the holiday break," the coach said. Black and Blue Captains Prevail at Big Red Tourney

Other wrestling highlights included Maleek Newsome's first varsity victory.

Two Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers won medals in the 2011 Tyngsboro Big Red Tournament. The team earned 56.5 points in the tournament and placed 11th overall in the 16-team tournament.  "I was very pleased with the way the co-captains Jeff (Sherman) and Jake (Powell) wrestled, they led their team by example," said Coach Mike Stamison. Other bright spots were Maleek Newsome winning his first varsity match at 170 lbs by executing a text book bow-and-arrow cradle, twisting his opponent up and pinning him for the win, the coach said. Powell, a Swampscott junior, won first place in the 113-pound weight class and Sherman, a Marblehead senior, took fourth place in the 126-pound weight class. It was Powell's 50th high school wrestling victory. …

Want to Wrestle for the Black and Blue?

The High School coach will host a wrestling clinic and informational session for prospectove wrestlers on Monday at Swampscott High at 5 pm.

Coach Michael Stamison and the wrestling team will hold a clinic and informational session for Marblehead and Swampscott high school students interested in joining or learning more about the co-op high school wrestling team. The clinic is Monday from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Swampscott High School gym.
