Swampscott Stymied in Danvers Tilt
Swampscott's modest three-game winning streak came to a screeching halt Friday night as the Blue never got untracked against a high-flying Danvers team that rushed out to a 28-0 lead and cruised to a 35-7 win. Both teams sport a 4-4 record. Swampscott hosts undefeated NEC powerhouse Beverly, ranked 9th in Eastern Mass, next Saturday in a 2:30 tilt at Blocksidge Field.

The Swampscott defense was able to contain the quick Salem attack in the second half, while Brian Santry maintained his composure and led his team to victory.
It came down to the final seconds at Blocksidge Field for the second week in a row. The Swampscott Big Blue scored consecutive touchdowns in the 4th quarter to steal a close 21-13 win against the Salem Witches, with big plays coming in the second half on both sides of the ball. The Big Blue trailed 14-13, with 3:01 left in the fourth quarter. Swampscott was able to force an incomplete pass from Salem quarterback Christan Dunston on fourth down to give the Blue possession on their own 40-yard-line. Seven plays later, an Aaron Cronin touchdown run, and a Ryan January PAT, clinched the victory with a minute left. “I just think we continued to battle, and we made all the big plays in the fourth quarter,” said head coach Steve Dembowski. “We …

Swampscott was one play away from scoring on several occasions – but each time Revere’s defense was too much for them.
The Swampscott Big Blue were within 26 yards of the end zone four times during yesterday’s game versus the Revere Patriots. However, the Blue were only able to get six points out of those four possessions, and ended up losing 21-6 in a game that was a lot closer than the scoreboard read. Brian Santry ran for one touchdown, but that did not outdo the firepower of Revere quarterback Joe Ritchie, who threw for two touchdowns and ran one in as well. Ritchie received great help from his two running backs, Tom Portrait and Andy Resitano, who converted several first downs to keep drives going for the Patriots. Swampscott’s offense didn’t get out to the start they wanted. On 2nd down of its first drive, a high snap caused Santry to chase the …

The back-and-forth game tested the wills of both teams in a hot, humid five-hour night that started with a 90-minute delay due to lightning.
Big Blue's season-opening 34-32 win on the road Friday against Somerville was a see-saw battle, a tug-of-war. The teams traded opening-drive scores. Both converted big fourth downs. Both quarterbacks had long runs. Both teams committed costly personal fouls, made key interceptions and struggled against exhaustion and cramps in the heat and humidity. Swampscott scored five touchdowns on five runs. Three of them were by QB Brian Santry who scampered into the end zone on 60-yard, 36-yard and 1-yard runs. Aaron Cronin and Mark Rittiboon had the other touchdown runs. The teams traded big interceptions inside the final five minutes, with Swampscott safety Brendan McDonald making the final pick on a tipped ball in the middle of the field. …

The Big Blue football team continued a tradition of playing solid and sound football in 2011. That formula carried them to victories against much larger schools. They won all but two games, rallying for several wins in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. It was an exciting run for the team, the school and their supporters. Here are photos from the preseason and season. Bob Marra took the game photos and Bob Roche took the preseason shots.

Information for this article was submitted by Karyn Walsh. The Big Blue Football team would like to acknowledge the generosity of the Swampscott VFW Post 1240 for hosting the last team dinner of the season. Commander John Sacherski was thrilled to have the boys! He generously donated the space and was extremely hospitable. The players' parents were grateful, too. The team dinners are usually served at a player's home. But that was difficult Nov. 23, since many homes were preparing for Thanksgiving. The team ate its traditional fare at the VFW hall — including chicken and brocolli, and red sauce, pasta and meatballs. And the veterans made them feel at home.
