The Big Blue rolled in their home opener.
The Winthrop Vikings have never been an easy matchup for the Big Blue. Since the 2007-08 basketball season, the Vikings have defeated Swampscott nine out of the ten times the two played, and have won the last eight meetings against Swampscott. However, the Big Blue’s fast start in the first quarter propelled them to a 66-53 victory over Winthrop, throwing the Vikings’ winning streak against the Blue out the window. Swampscott went on a 17-5 run in the first eight minutes of action, and did not stop until the final buzzer sounded. Thanks to a great performance by John King, Stephen Bowers, and Val Temin on offense, Swampscott dominated on the offensive side. When King wasn’t open for a midrange jump shot, he found Bowers crashing inside. …

After 18 years as a Swampscott High girls basketball coach Jack Hughes has announced his retirement.
Big Blue girls basketball coach Jack Hughes' most memorable coaching moment came before the Div. 3 finals in 2009. The girls were so focused on the task at hand before the game that he did not have to say anything, or much of anything. The coach knew they were ready. They went out and defeated Pentucket and continued an incredible run to the state championship. Now, Hughes, 61, doesn't have a lot of words to describe why he feels it is time to step down as Swampscott High's basketball coach. He just knows he is ready. So he is putting down his coach's clipboard and closing the books on teaching, too. He is retiring. June 30, is his last day with the Beverly School District where he teaches history at the middle school. He knew he was …

The Swampscott High girls now know who their opponent will be school on Saturday night in the second round of the MIAA tournament. Big Blue will play Stoneham.
The Stoneham lady Spartans squeezed by the Lynnfield Pioneers on Thursday night in front of a packed Stoneham gymnasium by a score of 48-44. The win sets up a second-round match-up against Swampscott Saturday at 7 at Swampscott High School. Sam Trant nailed four free throws with seconds remaining to ice the game for the Spartans. Baskets were hard to come by for both teams early on. Neither team could take advantage of each other’s turnovers and missed hoops, but it was a halftime speech by head coach Sarah Mills that got her team going out of the gate in the third quarter. “It was a very up and down game and I showed them stats at halftime that we only had nine offensive rebounds in the first half and that is just not going to cut it,” …

This article was submitted by the JCC. Nearly 100 hoops fans packed the JCC gym to play and compete in the popular Jimmy Myers 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Monday, honoring the memory of a local hero and raising money for important sports programs. Jimmy Myers was a beloved coach at the J for 25 years, where he mentored thousands of kids about good sportsmanship. He ran youth and adult basketball leagues, coached, refereed and led after-school classes. “It was great to see Jimmy’s legacy alive on the court,” said Andrew Dalton, director of Sports and Aquatics and the J. “Everyone played their best and had fun – that’s what Jimmy taught us to do.” The annual tourney raised $3,000 for sports and rec programs at the JCC.
