Advanced Placement Classes Expanded at High School

The seats in AP classes have more than doubled since the 2009-10 school year.

Swampscott High will offer additional Advanced Placement classes this year, bringing their total number to 14 classes. The number of seats in these classes is about 330 for the 2012-13 school year, a six-year high, said Swampscott High Principal Layne Millington. That compares to about 145 seats just three years ago in the 2009-10 school year, he said. (Some students take more than one AP class so the school measures the overall size of the program by seats not students.) This year's new classes, or those that have been restored after a hiatus, include environmental science, biology, music theory and art history. The principal would like to offer an AP physics class next year if enough students sign up for it. Average scores for AP …

You Asked Patch Answers: What is the Senior (Tunnel) Ceremony?

We asked Swampscott High's principal to explain what happens on the first day of school when the seniors line up at the entrance to the high school.

Prompted by questions and comments about the annual ceremony at the entrance to school on the first day, known as the senior tunnel, we asked Swampscott High Principal Layne Millington to describe the event. This is what the principal had to say: The event has been taking place since at least 2004. The principal said that he can not say what the event was like in earlier years but in his two years at the school the event has been a celebration. Seniors are excited to be seniors and they let everyone know this at the entrance. "It's just loud — real loud," he said. The morning starts with at least some of the senior class going to breakfast at a student's parents' house, he said. After breakfast the students get a police escort to the …

Time to Dance Back to School

Many customers who step through the door of Infinity Boutique at Vinnin Square this time of year are searching for dance attire and shoes and bags.

School will soon start, and that includes area dance schools. As parents register their children and older dancers register themselves for ballet, jazz, tap and other classes, many of them will turn to Infinity Boutique for outfits, shoes and bags. From the end of August to September the store sees about a 75 percent uptick in business. "All day long we are doing dance," said Kathy Cohen of Infinity Boutique at Vinnin Square. On Friday Kathy toured the racks and shelves of dresses, shoes and bags at the back of the store. Inifinity supplies Boston Ballet and local dance and gymnastic studios with everything they need for dance but the instruction. There are skirts, leotards, tights, tank tops, dresses, sweatshirts, big bags, little bags…
