Big Blue Fall in Last Home Game

At Blocksidge Field, Swampscott took on Division 3 Arlington Catholic (13-4) in a non-league game Thursday. The game was important for the seeding for the upcoming State Tournament. The Big Blue fell behind early and despite tying the game, eventually fell 8-6. The Arlington Catholic Cougars jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before the Big Blue could get going. Swampscott seniors Patrick Kennedy and Matt Gambale would cut the lead in half. Kennedy first from Gambale and then Gambale from Kennedy to make it 4-2 at the end of the 1st quarter. Josh Rothwell cut the lead to 4-3 with an unassisted second quarter goal. It looked like things would be tied at the half as Gambale scored as the horn sounded, but the referee ruled that the goal had …

Grown Ups 2 Pool Set at Phillips Taking Shape

Stacked container cars will form a building for the set, enclosing the pool which will be set off the ground.

The Grown Ups 2 movie set at Phillips Park will include an "in-ground pool" set well above ground. Ten-foot-high shipping container cars stacked at Phillips Park Thursday were forming walls for the Hollywood set being constructed on the practice football field behind the Bertram House. The set will host multiple days of filming pool scenes. These scenes were once targeted for Piper Field in Marblehead but are now to be shot in Swampscott. The set construction has a long ways to go before any stars in the movie cast that includes Adam Sandler, David Spade, Taylor Lautner, Chris Rock and Salma Hayek float, flop or swim in a pool. When they do take to the water, the action will be off the ground on an elevated pool set inside those shipping…

Swampscott Little League Field Naming Ceremony Sunday

The field will be named for Al Duratti, Andrew Holmes and Alfio Cerone.

On Sunday after the 9 am Swampscott Little League parade, league representatives will name the Forest Avenue field in memory of Al Duratti, Andrew Holmes and Alfio Cerone, said Dan Santanello, a member of the league's Board of Directors. The three men volunteered for a combined 140 seasons or so of Little League baseball in town, enriching kids' lives. Family members will be at Sunday's ceremony where a sign will be unveiled on the building behind home plate. The sign will bare the Duratti, Homes and Cerone names. A formal plaque dedication ceremony will be held in the future at some point. Last November selectmen approved the field naming after league representatives told the board how much of themselves the volunters had given to the …

Matinee Masterpiece

Jesse DePaolo netted seven goals; Blue topped St. Mary's in Saturday afternoon's tilt.

Jessie DePaolo glowed in Saturday's sunshine as she tallied seven times to lead Swampscott to a 15-8 win over St. Mary's in a rare matinee matchup at Manning Field in Lynn. The win raised the Blue's record to 6-9. Chloe Dorgan and Kita Whelan added three goals apiece as the Swampscott attackers led the runaway with ten second-half goals after a close first half. Lauren Sullivan scored the Blue's two other goals. Samantha Coogan backboned a stingy Swampscott defense and slammed the door on St. Mary's, holding the hosts to just three goals in the second half.

Big Blue Earns Text Book Win on College Field

The Swampscott Big Blue defeated Revere 3-1 Friday at Salem State University.

Big Blue softball played on a college field with college precision Friday when they beat Revere 3-1 under the lights at Salem State University. This was their first time on the Viking's field and an artificial surface, the coach said. They wasted no time familiarizing themselves with home plate, scoring their first run in the first inning. Noel Landry doubled, and Kelly Birchmore doubled her in. Revere scratched Swampscott pitcher Angela Vousboukis for a run in the top of the fourth inning on a sharp single up the middle. The bright green ball flashed just beyond the outstretched glove of diving Kelly Birchmore and the score was 1-1. Revere threatened to score in two innings but on each occassion the Big Blue defense made heads-up or …
