Less then 10 seconds decided the winner.
Nine seconds made the difference between second place and victory Sunday morning in the 13th annual JCC Triathlon by the Sea. With little wind, lots of sunshine and refreshing temperatures in the mid-50s, a Boston University strength and conditioning coach from Watertown, Victor Brown, crossed the line first. Brown clocked 52:13 in the 1/8-mile swim, 10-mile bike and 3.5-mile run over the Swampscott and Marblehead course. Spectators, some in lawn chairs and hugging coffee mugs at the ends of their driveways, cheered the bikers and runners as they wheeled and pounded past. Family and friends formed a welcome-to-the-end gauntlet at the JCC entrance. Runners veered from Atlantic Avenue to Community Road climbing a short hill to the finish …

Boys Beat the Clock to Top Salem; Girls Fall to Lynnfield
It was a split decision for Swampscott High lacrosse Saturday as the girls fell to Lynnfield 14-9 at Blocksidge Field. Later in the day, the boys notched two goals in the final seconds of play to surge past Salem 13-12. The girls were led by Seniors Chloe Dorgan and Bridget Lawless each tallied two goals. Alexa Goldman, Marina Roberts, Cathryn Singley, Priscilla Sullivan, and Mackenzie Robertson each added a goal while freshman goaltender Katie Papele blocked ten shots in the Swampscott net. At Salem's Bertram Field, Swampscott trailed 12-11 with under a minute to play but roared ahead, scoring the winning goal with nine seconds showing on the clock. Junior Captain Griffin Hunt (2 goals) scored the game tying goal with 29 seconds …
The girls need to win a few more down the stretch to qualify for post-season action.
After Big Blue's 9-3 loss to Winthrop earlier in the week the girls needed three wins to be play-off bound. "We are 7-7 and battling for a play-off spot," said Coach Frank Kowalski. "The kids have learned a lot and we keep putting an emphasis on the little things and focusing on our defense." The coach said junior pitcher Danielle Mayblyum has stepped up. Offensively, Tori Thisle and Sam Rizzo have been steady contributors and played solid defense. "Tessa Bean and Christina King are our power hitters and we are looking for them both to get hot down the stretch," the coach said. The coach said Big Blue played their best game last week losing to Danvers 2-0 on their field. Danvers is 16-0, and Kowalski said his team outplayed them. If the …

The informational session and tour is this Saturday, May 18 at 4:30 pm at Blocksidge Field
The "Friends of Swampscott Athletic Fields" (formerly known as the athletic Field Study Committee) will hold an informational session and tour this Saturday, May 18 at 4:30 pm at Blocksidge Field (the field inside the stadium at Phillips Park). This volunteer group has worked hard to develop a cost-effective and safe field turf proposal for Swampscott. Given the continued shortage and overuse of our town fields, Swampscott Youth Soccer strongly supports the initiative to remedy our fields. Please take some time on Saturday to attend the information session and learn more about what you can do to get involved.

After seven consecutive postseason contending years, the Big Blue are falling due to a lack of experience combined with a more difficult schedule
Ever since the beginning of Josh Field’s reign as the head coach of the Big Blue lacrosse program, he has never missed a postseason appearance. In 2006 and 2007, the Big Blue, led by defenseman Sam Johnson and leading scorer Alex Junda, began their stretch of postseason runs, with the 2006 season marking Swampscott’s first playoff berth, and latter year of the Johnson-Junda era ending in the second round of the playoffs, a place Swampscott had never been before. In 2008, Swampscott fell to an even 10-10 after going 12-6 in the year before. Guided by A.J. Zarinsky’s record-breaking season on offense, the Big Blue continued on to the playoffs before bowing out to Scituate in the first round. In 2009, Zarinsky missed nine games, but thanks to…

Swampscott swamped Bedford on Saturday, 12-1.
Ryan January and Brendan McDonald belted home runs and senior lefthander Alex Zuchero stifled batters all afternoon as Swampscott rolled to a 12-1 win over Bedford Saturday, avenging the Big Blue's 13-0 season-opening loss to the Buccaneers. The threat of rain hung heavy over the Middle School field throughout the game, but a Swampscott victory was safely in the books by the time things got damp in the sixth inning. The win boosted Swampscott's overall record to 6-9. For a look at Robert Marra's photography visit his website.

A look back at the Swampscott Little League parade.
In a sure sign that spring is here, over 500 Swampscott Little Leaguer's and their families took to the streets on a beautiful Sunday morning for the annual Swampscott Little League parade. Led by Swampscott Police and Fire vehicles and the North Shore Navigator's Mascot ("Chomps the Gator"), boys and girls from age 4-16 years old laughed, screamed, and marched their way from Hadley School to the Duratti-Holmes-Cerone(“DHC”) fields on Forest Ave. Upon arrival at the beautiful baseball and softball field complex, Little League President Mike Pegnato welcomed the players, coaches, parents, and families, and thanked all for their continued support and contributions to the success of the league. Pegnato then turned the microphone over to …

Molly Conner's hockey game is never on ice. She has been playing since she was 6.
Here is Q & A with Swampscott hockey enthusiast Molly Conner. Molly, president of the Swampscott Historical Society, has loved hockey since she was 6 years old. She was a pioneer on ice, lacing up skates at a time when very few girls played the sport. She also has a history of playing for winning teams. Back in the day she played for a team called the Polar Bears, and competed in the national championship. Her hockey odyssey continued at the University of New Hampshire where in 1990-91 she played on the Women's ECAC Championship team. Back in 2010, she played in Detroit in the Women's B Division National Championship. Molly recently skated on a national championship hockey team. Below, we talk to Molly about the tournament and what's next …
