Shooter Still at Large in Essex Street Shooting Monday

Swampscott police gave chase, pursuing the suspect shortly after midnight.

The incident began early Monday with a suspect fleeing a shooting on Essex Street in Lynn just over the Swampscott line. The pursuit and search wound down hours later with a helicopter sweeping Salem. In between, Swampscott police gave chase, with Sgt. Jay Locke pulling over the suspect's vehicle on Paradise Road — and its driver hitting the gas, said Swampscott police. Earlier, just after midnight, Swampscott police got a be-on-the-lookout report for a silver SUV wanted in connection with the shooting that just happened on Essex Street in Lynn, said Swampscott police Lt. Bill Waters. Swampscott police officers Caruso and Hennessey saw a silver SUV on New Ocean Street entering Swampscott. They turned around but Sgt. Jay Locke had the …

Firefighters Stay Sharp at Riverhead

Marblehead hosted classroom and field training for its firefighters and those from Swampscott, Gloucester and Oxford departments this week.

Twenty-eight firefighters converged on Riverhead Beach Wednesday running a network of lines through fire trucks and sending streams of water arcing into the harbor. At each truck, teachers from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy reviewed pump skills and critiqued firefighters' actions. Instructors peppered crews with questions, hosting mini field quizzes amid the din of hissing water and rumbling pumps. The goal, said Marblehead Fire Chief Jason Gilliland, is to keep firefighters' skills sharp for the real deal — fires. They know the drill. Marblehead firefighters have been through 12 weeks of fire academy training. "They know pumps and hydraulics front and back," the fire chief said. But the classroom studies, held Tuesday, and …

Officials Talk About Joining Police Mutual Aid Group NEMLEC

NEMLEC consists of 51 police and two sheriffs departments in Middlesex County and Essex County.

The large-scale law enforcement search in Watertown for at-large bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on April 19 brought to mind whether Swampscott should join the regional police response group NEMLEC, the town administrator said. Town Administrator Tom Younger told selectmen on Wednesday that the perimeter set up and house-to-house search — a 20-block effort — in Watertown isn't something that a single police department such as Swampscott could do. He said he plans to continue talks with Swampscott Police Chief Ron Madigan about joining the North East Law Enforcement Council, a regional law enforcement mutual aid group. He said membership would help the town respond to hostage situations, kidnapping and other serious disturbances. …

In my opinion it is not worth the cost to this small town to join METROLEC. Although not perfect by any means, State can/will provide what our own PD cannot on the very rare occasion it is needed. Sure, would it provide ongoing ‘high-speed’ training for some of this town’s officers (and for them, sorry) and yes this would provide us with homegrown enhanced capabilities, but these would be limited…   more ›

I don't think that's very fair to say "well if you don't like it, there's the door" when we're talking about regional stories. You simply can't apply Westford rules to regional stories. I respect that you're trying to do what you think is right by your readers, but when it comes to a regional story, it's way bigger than Westford.   more ›

When I first moved back to Lynn in January '07 I was told, "This is not your grandfather's Lynn anymore. Be careful." There were gang wars all the time, with numerous fatalities and critical injuries. Since the new Mayor came in 3 years ago, there hasn't been a single gang war, and crime is way down. It might not be perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than it was. Given the number of social …   more ›
