Swampscott High's principal since 2010, Layne Millington, talks about his early departure.
Principal Layne Millington’s early departure from Swampscott High will give him more time with his family and time to transition to his new position in Marblehead. The time off will be a mini-sabbatical, of sorts, the principal said in an interview Wednesday. He will get to spend more time with injured and sick members of his family. His 11-year-old son is in a cast, having suffered a broken leg. His mom, a resident at Brooksby Village in Peabody, is sick. The principal’s last day at the school will be May 28, but he will be at the Class of 2013's graduation ceremony June 2. The principal said his focus, through June 2, will be on the graduating seniors, preparing for and seeing through their ceremonies. These include the class awards …
Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.
At Patch we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try these…

Outgoing lieutenant governor said recent controversies had nothing to do with decision to resign.
Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said none of the controversies that have dogged him during his tenure on Beacon Hill contributed to his decision to announce his resignation. In a press conference at the State House Wednesday, Murray said his final day on the job will be June 2. The next day he will take over as president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce where his salary will reportedly be around $200,000. In January, Murray said he had no intention of running for governor when Gov. Deval Patrick's term expires in January 2015. "This has been a very difficult but empowering decision," Murray said. "It has been an honor to serve as lieutenant governor." Patrick called Murray an "outstanding partner" during his time in …

The Swampscott girls tennis team is continuing its winning ways. They won Friday against Saugus 5-0 (home). And Monday they won 5-0 against Winthrop (away game).
The additional business is expected to open in early summer.
Verizon will sell cell phone equipment in a showroom in part of the former Blockbuster location on Paradise Road. The communications company needs a use permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals, and, after receiving it, must wait 20 days before opening, said Rich Baldacci of the Swampscott Building Department. The use permit is required of any new business that seeks a permit to open in the business complex at 1016 Paradise Road, in keeping with the original decision by the Planning Board, rendered when the retail spaces were constructed. Town Planner Pete Kane said Verizon has applied for a use permit and is expected on the ZBA agenda June 19. The entire Blockbuster space is 4,700 square feet.
