Comeback Falls Short

Big Blue Fall in Last Home Game

At Blocksidge Field, Swampscott took on Division 3 Arlington Catholic (13-4) in a non-league game Thursday. The game was important for the seeding for the upcoming State Tournament. The Big Blue fell behind early and despite tying the game, eventually fell 8-6. The Arlington Catholic Cougars jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before the Big Blue could get going. Swampscott seniors Patrick Kennedy and Matt Gambale would cut the lead in half. Kennedy first from Gambale and then Gambale from Kennedy to make it 4-2 at the end of the 1st quarter. Josh Rothwell cut the lead to 4-3 with an unassisted second quarter goal. It looked like things would be tied at the half as Gambale scored as the horn sounded, but the referee ruled that the goal had …

Updated: Large Water Main Break Shuts Down Service on Puritan

Water service is expected to be restored by at least day's end.

Friday before 9 am resident Victor Foresta looked down from his kitchen window and saw a stream gushing across Puritan Road. The stream, an estimated 8-inches deep, coursed to the nearby Whales Beach path and poured into the ocean. "It looked like a tsunami going backwards," he said, surveying a layer of silt in front of his house. Police, fire and DPW crews arrived to the scene and barricaded Puritan Road, set up details and closed line gates to shut down the flow of water. DPW Director Gino Cresta said about 20 homes are without water. The homes are on Puritan Road and Lincoln House Point.  The director called in Meninno Construction to dig up the road and repair the line. He expects water service to be restored before day's end. On …

Swampscott Pair Charged With B&E at Humphrey Street Residence

The man and woman allegedly broke into a fellow resident's apartment and removed a convection oven and other items.

Two Swampscott residents are scheduled for hearings in July in Lynn District Court on breaking and entering charges. Robin Kelly, 48, and John Furey, 45, both of 246 Humphrey St., Floor 3, were arrested by Swampscott police on May 7, and charged with breaking and entering in the night for a felony and receiving stolen property over $250, police said. They were arraigned the following day in Lynn District Court and released on personal recognizance bail. The pair allegedly entered a second-floor apartment in the same complex where they live and removed items including clothing and a convection oven, according to court documents. The victim told police that she had been away from her apartment for about a week. Upon returning, she …

Grown Ups 2 Pool Set at Phillips Taking Shape

Stacked container cars will form a building for the set, enclosing the pool which will be set off the ground.

The Grown Ups 2 movie set at Phillips Park will include an "in-ground pool" set well above ground. Ten-foot-high shipping container cars stacked at Phillips Park Thursday were forming walls for the Hollywood set being constructed on the practice football field behind the Bertram House. The set will host multiple days of filming pool scenes. These scenes were once targeted for Piper Field in Marblehead but are now to be shot in Swampscott. The set construction has a long ways to go before any stars in the movie cast that includes Adam Sandler, David Spade, Taylor Lautner, Chris Rock and Salma Hayek float, flop or swim in a pool. When they do take to the water, the action will be off the ground on an elevated pool set inside those shipping…

Actually, many of the estimated 500 visitors will stick around until the end of the fair, if the past is any gauge, says Carin Marshall, an event organizer. This is the fair's 20th anniversary. It runs from 11 am to 4 pm. For many, the finale is the arrival of the cow to the field toward the end of the fair, Carin said. Kids especially enjoy the pony rides and rides. Swampscott Firefighter and Officer to Plate Runs for Veterans

The public safety officers are running in Sunday's Run-Walk to Home Base, ending at Fenway Park.

Here's how the firefighter and police officer found out they both would be crossing home plate at Fenway Park on Sunday: About two months ago officer Candace Doyle asked firefighter Richard Blake to donate to her Run-Walk to Home Base fundraiser for veterans. The firefighter told her he was also running in the fundraiser for veterans who have returned from Iraq or Afghanistan with combat stress or brain injuries. The firefighter and police officer will be among 4,000 runners and walkers in Sunday's event.   Each of the participants will raise at least $1,000 to provide clinical care for the vets, support for their families and research to prevent these kinds of injuries and improve treatments. Combat stress and brain injuries effect as …

Letter to the Editor: Toward a Responsible Artificial Turf Field

Dr. Lawrence Block of the Board of Health would support a safe and sound Blocksidge Field renovation.

Two news stories were published on May 17 which made me think about how I hope the renovation plan to install artificial turf at Blocksidge Field progresses.  The first report was that the Centers for Disease Control lowered the threshold for lead poisoning in children, from 10 to 5 mcg/dl.  Overnight, the number of children in the US with lead toxicity doubled to 450,000 cases.  Of course, there has never been a safe level of exposure to lead or to any other heavy metal;  it just took until now for studies to prove such low levels to be toxic.  Similarly, of the 80,000 chemicals approved for sale by the US government, few have been studied to demonstrate their long-term safety. Concern for possible lead (present in some artificial …

I think the proposal lacks support for a few reasons. It's expensive no matter which way you go. It does not affect the clear majority of families, hence the vote results. The folks that want it are losing credibility by constantly changing their story about what was or will be proposed. Lynn and others are realizing their artificial turf is not quite what they were told. It may be better, but it…   more ›
