The department, located on the second floor at historic Town Hall, offers year-round programs for children and adults.
In winter, programs include basketball, skiing, indoor tennis, soccer and track.
Two of the largest programs, playgrounds and sailing, take place during the summer, from the end of June to mid-August.
Playgrounds serve about 250 children, and the sailing programs offer instruction to about 175 students.
Various camps are hosted in the summer as well. The department adds new programs each year.
