They come to get their blood flowing and their blood pressure tested. Visitors to the Swampscott Senior Center -- there were more than 1,000 in September -- exercise their legs in line dancing and tap dancing, and exercise their minds in creative writing programs. They enjoy a meal and socialize at the card table, playing games of poker and bridge.

The center, located behind Swampscott High School, also offers advice on healthy eating and taxes, and refers seniors to individuals and agencies for services unavailable at the center. Any senior from any town is welcome, but Swampscott residents get free transportation to and from the center.
