Scrapbook: After the Race

250 runners took part in the 9/11 Heroes Run on Sunday in Swampscott.

Swampscott runner Derek Stevens ran away from the field.

The high school assistant cross country coach crossed the finish line at the VFW Post 1240 on Pine Street in 17:44.

Sarah Kelley of Swampscott finished third at 24:56.

Among the field were the Lavender family including 9-year-old Austin Lavender.

The race benefited the Travis Manion Foundation, started on behalf of Travis Manion, who was killed by enemy sniper fire in Iraq.

The Foundation supports seminars, scholarships and community service projects.

Sunday’s race did not go off without a hitch.

Some runners strayed from the course and one contestant reportedly broke an ankle.

Still, after the race, the parking lot at VFW Post 1240 was filled with people having a good time including runners, race organizers and other supporters.

Lynn English Jr. ROTC members served hamburgers, hot dogs and macaroni salad.

Brian Scully played some terrific country music including covers and his own songs.
