Three Ways to Spring Into Recycling

Here are three convenient ways to recycle, donate and dispose of unwanted items.

1) Swampscott Zero Waste Day, Saturday, April 21, 9 a.m. to noon, Swampscott High School Parking Lot.

Bring your alkaline and rechargeable batteries, mercury-items, and old eyeglasses to Zero Waste Day for recycling. Goodwill Industries will be set up in the front parking lot to collect unwanted and old clothing, textiles (regardless of their condition), electronics and household goods.

Event organizers will be selling recycle bins ($7) and taking orders for cylindrical composters. ‘Recycle’ stickers will be handed out and there will be a table to 'drop and swap' your books, CDs, DVDs and sporting goods.

The annual used bike sale will be held in the rear parking lot, with proceeds to benefit the Swampscott Rail Trail. Bike, scooter and skateboard donations will be accepted from 9 to 10 a.m. The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.

Join the fun! This is a rain or shine event.

2) Household Hazardous Waste Day, Saturday, June 2, 9 a.m. to noon, Tower Way, Marblehead.

Clean out the hazards lurking in your home. HHW collectors will accept: pesticide and lawn chemicals, oil paints, spray paints and varnishes, pool chemicals, mercury items, cleaning products, bleach, nail polish and hair dyes, chemistry kits, various art supplies, photography chemicals, Styrofoam, automotive fluids, etc. For a complete listing and more details, go to Swampscott Health Department web page.

3)  Bulky Rigid Plastics Collection, The Newark Group Recovery and Recycling, 53 Jefferson Ave., Salem, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Swampscott residents can now recycle bulky rigid plastics, such as: buckets, barrels, totes, children’s play houses and toys, laundry baskets, coolers, patio furniture, flower pots, and milk crates.  When arriving, check in with the front office for assistance.
