Things To Do Over Winter Break

December break is here! For those students and families not traveling, but rather staying local instead, here are some activity suggestions during the almost 2-week break.

Body Worlds: Vital

Now open on the second floor of Quincy Market in Faneuil Hall, “Body Worlds: Vital” takes the human body and makes it an attraction. The exhibit’s website indicates that it “celebrates the potential of the active and actualizing human body.” The exhibit, open for a limited time, consists of 15 full human bodies and about 200 specimens for guests to be awe inspired by. The process used to preserve the bodies is called plastination and begun in 1977. All bodily fluids and fats are replaced with plastic. Emma McGuirk, an employee at the exhibit, noted, “it’s a great exhibit for teens because it offers an exclusive and unique perspective into the intricate vital systems that define the human body.”

Skating On Frog Pond

The Boston Common Frog Pond is a great destination for high school teens to go with their friends. "Ice skating at Frog Pond is a great activity to do instead of sitting at home; the crisp Winter air and slick surface made me feel like I was Michelle Kwan, gliding over the ice, doing twirls with my best friends!,” said Senior, Abby Price. The location is in the heart of downtown, so after skating around, students can warm up in the shops of Newbury Street or the Prudential Center.

Admission: $5.00

Skate Rentals: $9.00

30-minute Group Lesson: $40.00

Peabody Essex Museum/Salem

The PEM is a great destination for any student or family looking for an inexpensive option for entertainment. Visitors can leisurely walk through the exhibits for hours, get a snack at the cafe, and take something home from the gift shop. Some of the current exhibitions include “Impressionists On The Water, Future Beauty: Avant-Garde Japanese Fashion, and Beyond Human: Artist-Animal Collaborations.” Once visitors have feasted their eyes on some beautiful works, there is the option of walking around downtown Salem, right outside the Peabody Essex Museum’s doors.

Admission: $10 for students, FREE for 16 and under

Skiing/Snowtubing

There is snow on the ground so take a ride up to your favorite slopes, or visit the Amesbury Sports Park for $27 for a 3 hour pass.
