Swampscott Public Schools Welcome a New Superintendent

As Swampscott Public Schools welcomed a new school year, they also welcomed new Superintendent Dr. Garry Murphy. This past June, Murphy met with the school committee, yet did not establish contracts until July 1st. Finally, on July 5th, Murphy started as Interim Superintendent of Swampscott Public Schools.

Before coming to Swampscott, Murphy acted as Superintendent for both Triton and Hillsborough School Districts. In the past, he has also held the position of High School US History Teacher and Curriculum Director.

Murphy has made an easy transition to Swampscott Superintendent. “I’ve met a lot of great people, I’m not full time, I’m partnering with Pamela Angelakis and the town administrator and principals have all been very supportive,” said Murphy.

Rumors have circulated that current Assistant Superintendent Pamela Angelakis is training to eventually become Superintendent. “That’s a possibility, I hope that that happens. We need stability, not constant change. It is the school committee that will make that decision though,” said Murphy.

As the year has progressed, Murphy has had a positive experience with the community and schools. “I’m very impressed with the staff and students; there are a lot of people that really care about their schools. I have seen great pride in those that have graduated, it is very apparent to me.”

There has been a distinct relation between Murphy becoming Superintendent, and school policies being enforced. Of all the school policies that have been changed, the one that has received a large deal of attention from students is open campus. When asked about open campus, Murphy expressed that both he and Swampscott High Principal Edward Rozmiarek felt very uncomfortable with 9th graders roaming and 11th graders leaving. He also seemed to be eager to hear student opinions on the matter.

As the school year progresses it will be interesting to see how Murphy acts as the Interim Superintendent of Swampscott Public Schools.
