UPDATED: Shark Sightings Off Eisman's Beach

Lifeguards made sure any swimmers were close to shore after Tuesday's report and kept an eye on the water.

A local fisherman reported seeing a couple four-foot sharks off Tuesday morning.

The fisherman reported the sighting to police at 10:34 am, saying the sharks were chasing bait fish in the vicinity of the beach and off the spindle.

The spindle is located about a half-mile out, said Recreation Director Danielle Strauss, who asked local mariner Harris Tibbetts how far the spindle is from shore.

Lifeguards at Eisman's and brought any swimmers venturing a distance from shore closer to the beach, the director said.

In addition, the lifeguards surveyed the water periodically with binoculars, looking for any sign of sharks.

This is the first time the director has recalled hearing, in her seven years as director, a report of sharks being in the area.

The North Shore is not prime shark habitat unlike parts of the outer Cape (Cod), said Tony LaCasse, media spokesman for the New England Aquarium.

Swimmers have more to worry about from blue fish than from a four-foot shark, he said.

A human wouldn't even be on the radar screen of a four-foot shark, he said.
