Track Teams Double Down on Lynn Classical

The Big Blue boys and girls track teams won their meets handily on a windy day at Swampscott High.

The Big Blue girls won their meet 85-46, and the boys won theirs 93-38 Wednesday at home versus Lynn Classical.

Swampscott girls' team Coach Joe Tenney said the team ran very well considering the high headwinds on the backstretch.

Assistant Coaches Mark D'Amico and Derek Stevens said the winds slow the times but the runners worked hard, as did the field-event athletes.

Shot putter Tiara Smith-Matthews threw a personal best, 30 feet 11 inches, taking first place, Tenney said. Hannah Rosen took third in the shot put with a throw of 22 feet 3.5 inches.

Haley Irwin earned second place finishes in the high jump, triple jump, and 100-meter high hurdles.

"Haley had a big day," Stevens said.

The Big Blue distance runners also had a successful day.

Emily Cerra, Sionna Hopkins and Michelle LaConte swept the 2-mile run. Karyssa King and Hannah King came in first and second in the mile.

Lynn Classical athletes turned in some impressive performances, as well.

Tashanna Brown won the high jump, clearing 4 feet 10 inches, and Hulerie McGuffie hit her stride and jumped 16 feet 5 inches in the long jump.

The Blue boys bounced back from their last meet against Salem with a strong performance, said Coach Peter Bush.

Matt Nardiello, PJ Nestor and Kevin Nguien swept the low hurdles.

Jermaine Kelly and Kevin Nguien went first and second in the high hurdles.

The coach also pointed to performances by Jake Conaty and Joe Nigro.

Conaty won the mile, placed in the 400 meters and was among the top finishers in jumping events.

Joe Nigro won the shot put and ran the second leg of the team's winning 4 X 100 relay race.

Tristan Smith had only been high jumping for two days but took second place with a jump of 5 feet 6 inches.

Ryan Kelley came in first in the 800.

"He's been consistent and a very hard worker," the coach said.
