Both the Boys and Girls Bantam(5th and 6th grade) teams will take on St. Margaret Mary of Westwood. The Boys play at 12:30pm and the Girls play at 4:15pm. The Girls Cadets(7th and 8th grade) will compete against St. Denis of Westwood at 3:00pm. All three teams competed in the North Shore CYO Playoffs this past week. Despite early wins, all three teams eventually lost in the Semi-Final Round.

Boys Bantams

On Thursday February 21st, St. John’s traveled to Medford to take on St. Rafael in a Quarter-final game. The game came down to the wire with St. John’s trailing with 2 minutes to go. But St. John’s scored 4 points in the last minute to pull out the win and head to the next round. Simon Keough led all scorers with 14 points and Ben Turner added 12.

On Saturday February 23rd, St. John’s took on IC Revere. Both teams had won a game at the opponents court during the regular season. St. John’s fell behind by double digits early and despite a late charge were never able to catch up, losing 43-34. Simon Keough once again paced St. John’s with 14 points. The highlight of the game turned out to be the 100th points of the season for both Jake Goldman and Simon Keough.

St. John’s heads to the State Tournament with four 100 point scorers in Jake Goldman(107), Simon Keough(106), Max Pegnato(114) and Ben Turner(125). This is the most since the 2007-2008 Boys Cadets with AJ Baker(144), Randolf Thurman(138), Michael Walsh(117) and Frank Legere(103).

Girls Bantams

On Saturday February 23rd, St. John’s took on St. Francis of Medford. St. John’s had been beaten twice during the regular season by St. Francis but were coming off a playoff win and hoped to change the outcome. But it was not to be. St. Francis scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed in a 45-30 win. Faye Parker led St. John’s with 16 points, 16 rebounds, and 8 blocks.

St. John’s heads to the State Tournament led by Faye Parker who averages a double/double of 11.1 points and 15.5 rebounds per game. But the key to St. John’s during the year has actually been the tenacious defense led by Mary Miles. St. John’s has held opponents to only 22 points per game. If Parker gets into foul trouble, they have relied on Jillian Flanders and Emma Tomlins to pick up the slack.

Girls Cadets

On Saturday February 23rd, St. John’s took on St. Rafael of Medford. Despite having beaten them earlier in the season, this time they had no answer for Medford.

St. John’s heads to the State Tournament with a Veteran team that has been there before. Nine of the eleven players were on the 2010-2011 Final Four Girls Bantam team. Jaymie Caponigo leads St. Johns’ with 11.5 points per game. Hannah Leahy averages 10.8 rebounds per game. They are a strong outside shooting team led by guards Kasey Kennedy and Elizabeth Weisse. Gabby LaRiviere helps out on the boards and Kendall Rhodes is a dominant defensive stopper. They head into the Tournament with a record of 11-4.
